What is the oldest UFO you've ever finished?
 

I'm curious. I just finished piecing (and is in line to be FMQ'd this winter) a quilt top that is over 12 years old. 12 years it lay in my UFO box because I hated it. This fall I decided to challenge myself to finish it. I put two flannel borders on it and have a nice warm flannel back ready. I actually like it now! So I figured I can't be the only one with a UFO that is OLD!!!

My very first quilt is still in my closet - but not finished. It is at least 40 years old. I picked a very complicated pattern and nothing went together too good - well, I think that I thought it looked good - but not now. A few years ago a friend was selling her longarm machine and called me on a Sunday and said that she had some extra batting and if I had any quilts that needed quilting to bring them right away. So, I gathered up a few tops and took them. She just did a very simple panto on them and we got them all done. But, this quilt still is unfinished and needs a binding on it. I have not shown it to anybody but my oldest DD.

I have a blue and purple pinwheel quilt I started at least 14 years ago. It is patiently waiting for me to get up the ambition. :)

Twenty five years....When my son was two (he is 27 and a half now) I made a denim and flannel quilt top that was intended to be finished then...first, I couldn't find a good contrast or match for the backing, then I didn't have any money, then I went through a divorce, etc...It just kept moving with me. Then as I started doing more quilting, it didn't seem good enough. Corners are not square, it has stains on it from him sleeping with it and getting a bloody nose, so I used that as an excuse for not finishing it. I finally decided that it was made with love, not perfection and actually finished it four weeks ago and have it packaged and ready to ship off to him in Atlanta. I hope he likes it.

I have one about 8 years old. Need to find it and get it finished!!

I need to quilt one that my mother and grandmother made, includes pieces of a dress I made in the summer of 1963 . But it also includes pieces of things they sewed in 1950.

When I retired about 6 years ago I finished 12 quilts. I still have some that are at least 10 years old that I lost interest in and never finished.

About 28 years - started one before my oldest son was born( he is now 30) - then life got in the way, we used it for him , then his brother, got packed away found it a couple of years ago and realized that it really needed the quilting finished. it was a little bit worse for wear BUT now it is done :thumbup:

I only started quilting about 7 years ago, except for one earlier attempt, a traditional English paper pieced kit made with Liberty fabrics, which sat unfinished for many years. One of the papers I used has a date on it - 1987. I've now finished it, but still have to make it into a cushion. So that's at least 24 years old!

Well, I'd have to say it was my Mom's embroidered quilt with all the state flowers. She finished the top, quilted it, and stopped at the binding. It is so old that Alaska and Hawaii were not states yet, so this was a UFO from roughly 1956 (older than me). I finished it about 5 years ago for her, so I guess it was a UFO roughly 50 years or so. Despite getting it done, she won't use it because "it's too nice". It will be going up on a wall in the next two years - I want her to enjoy it.

My personal oldest UFO that has been finished was a Tall Ships wallhanging. This was an early quilt for me and I believe my first attempt at freehand. The top went smoothly, the quilting did not. I tossed it into a bin in disgust. Finally got all the bad stitching out and completed it last year. I'd estimate roughly 16 years as a UFO.

My actual oldest UFO is a 1000 pyramids charm quilt that I started collecting squares for back in 1992. The top is done, finished last year, and it is ready to be quilted (2nd in line). Still haven't decided how to quilt it, but it's in 3 sections to make quilting easier. It has about 1,200 different fabrics. [ATTACH=CONFIG]286729[/ATTACH]

Lot's of things started for babies, left unfinished and gifted to the adult baby that it was started for. Me too! I started a quilt for my 3 year old to take to school for nap time. My mom sandwiched it and started in the ditch quilting on it. I pulled it out of the stash in September, ripped out the quilting which was only the center line in both directions, ironed and sent it to the LAQ. Not done...but almost done. Oh, the baby made 16 this year = 13 year UFO.

When I found this UFO, I found my "first quilt" which is still in pieces. That makes it the oldest at 16 years! I'm starting to get heart palpitations as I type just thinking about my UFOs. I need help. This is an illness or is this therapy? :)

In August I finished a block swap from my mini group - circa 2002? The challenge was to make 6" blocks using the color wheel as inspiration - complementary colors: blue/orange yellow/purple and red/green.
I put the blocks together, quilted it and gave it to my guild for our quilt show auction.

My DM started a quilt for me before we lost her twenty four years ago. I have been going to finish it but never have.

It's not finished yet but it is well on the way. Our guild challenge was to finish your oldest UFO or PIG. Mine was a shoebox full of cut pieces and a couple of completed shoefly blocks which I had intended to be my first quilt to use up all of my scraps from dresses, blouses etc that I had stitched for my sister and myself as a teenager. I hadn't even opened that box since 1976 and was just going to toss it all in the trash. Once I really looked at it, I just couldn't as it represented so much from my growing up. I could see our 4-H shirts, kitchen curtains, Centennial dress and so much more. Last winter, I sewed all the blocks and have enough to make two large lap/single quilts. I plan to sash, border, quilt and bind them this winter and give one to my sister and keep the other for me. They won't be my most beautiful quilts but they will be full of memories and a little reminder of home.

The oldest UFO I ever finished was 20 years old. I started it in 1984- my 1st quilt, all triangles (!!?!!)cut the blocks out with scissors, pieced them using 1/2 inch seams & put them away for 20 years! When I became interested in quilting I decided to finish the quilt, cut off a lot of points squaring up the blocks, used some nice quilting flannel on the back, practiced my FMQ on it for the 1st time & it is now an unattractive, warm, much used quilt!

My oldest UFO was a baby quilt for my daughter. She turned 31 in June and it's finally finished!!!

16 years old for me BUT a friend of mind - who asked I never tell anyone her name when relaying her oldest UFO story - never quilted & bound a quilt made for her son for his high schoolo graduation. She finished it for her grandsons ... when he got his doctorate ... telling him that it was a VINTAGE quilt. Cracks me up every time I think of it!

My oldest is from 2007. The year I started quilting. :)

I finished a quilt for my mother earlier this year, she had made embroidered blocks and I set them into a quilt. Started in 1987. She just gave me two more projects to finish that she started in the early 80's. Hope to have them done by her b-day in jan.

I have a Baltimore Album by Pam Bono that is 8 years in the making...so far. I got it out this week and did one block and cut out the next block. I have ten done in total so far and have told myself "no new projects until this is finished"...yeah right, like that's going to stop me. I have noticed a big change in my sewing abilities from the first block to the 10th block and wish I could start over again(not in this lifetime)...but, I am determined to finish this finally so it doesn't end up being a TEN year project.

We moved my mother in law into an assisted living facility a few months ago. While cleaning out her house, she came across a quilt top that was pieced by her grandmother. My mother in law is 84 so I can only imagine how old the quilt top would be. I keep staring at it trying to decide what to do. MyLQS examined it and decided it can be machine quilted. I am thinking of doing it ang giving it back to my MIL for Christmas. I am VERY nervous about it but if it won't hold up to the quilting process, it won't hold up to much else either. Seems to be in great condition......

YEA! I finally finished my oldest UFO- it's been living in a box for 10 years...it was a BOM- which i loved when i started it- and actually did get all 12 blocks made-started sashings, and settings-- but for a number of reasons i never got it put together---until yesturday- i would take it out and look at it- earlier this year i almost sent it away a number of times- but could not really part with it- i finally decided---this has to be finished- or given away---and i finished it...i will take pics later- just so happy to finally mark it off my list!
and although it is quite (flowery) my hubby even said---"that's a nice one" i didn't expect him to like it at all. i of course still have to quilt and bind it-but at least it has moved from the sewing room to the quilting room...now maybe im on a roll- and can empty a couple other boxes sitting in there...

In quilting, maybe about 7 years. In other crafts, I've finished things 20 years later.

20 years between embroidering a quilt and quilting it. Would not recommend this practice!

I am working on a quilt that I started in the mid 90's. I do have a pinwheel quilt that I started in the 70s but I doubt if I ever will get back to that.... taste has changed.....

I have 2 king sized quilt tops I made in the 80's for a big waterbed that I no longer have.Someday I may quilt them but the choices in fabric back then were so boring.

I'm disappointed. I wanted to see a picture!! My oldest UFO is about 8 years old. It is a Grandmother's flower garden.

I am just now finishing my 10th anniversary quilt. We will have been married 44 years in March!
