what is the pattern design of this sashing?
Here's another one I'm looking for the pattern/design info - its this sashing - I don't really know how to describe it. I'm hoping either one of you more experienced quilters knows or someone can point me to a pattern/tutorial.
This group is the best and I appreciate all the knowledge and sharing! https://plus.google.com/photos/11144...12713031300501 TIA ~ |
When I looked through that picasso album it had this further info in the comments section about that quilt from a 2008 show https://picasaweb.google.com/1114455...38408456412706

looks like large triangles made from two strips. one strip of color and a wider strip of white. then pieced together alternating up and down. many similar strip club designs from Cosy Quilt shop or Kathy Brown's books https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMXwYpoPz2s

I don't know about a tutorial, but just from looking at it:
The cornerstones are made of a pinwheel block as the middle of an exploding block (is there another name? I only know the one from the MSCQ tutorial! :)) The other part you can either make with diamonds cut in half and then add wide background fabric, similar to a flying geese. Or you sew a wide white strip to a coloured smaller one and cut triangles with a 60° angle from it. However, that way you'll have lots of triangles leftover with a dark bottom and a white top (opposite of the one in the quilt), but you can use that for the back of the quilt! @Pagzz: Typing at the same time! But great minds and all that...;) |
Yes ma'am! The quilt itself is beautiful - and I'm not looking for that type of project lol. I have seen this sashing in other quilts - this was the first one I found when actually looking for more info on the sashing. There are some beautiful quilts in that album.

Thanks pagzz - i have made a strip tube quilt but I didn't see it when I looked at this. maybe i'll try to figure that one out.
And Cathy77 - agree completely on cornerstones, pinwheels are easy enough. I think I'm not totally following your steps for making the offset pointy sashing. Does this pattern have a name? Thanks again! |
All I know is that if I tried to design that sashing to go with a quilt, without using a pattern, I would never be able to get the size right! It is really beautiful.

If this photo is large enough, you might be able to see the red piecing lines I've drawn as a suggestion.

@ Jan - I did enlarge from the original link and print it off. I came up with a close design to yours, I think I'll pull out the scrap box and see if I can make something work. I also wondered if this is just PP'ed?

Here's another image of the same type of sashing - this is more qst looking I think.

You might also consider paper piecing those narrow triangles. Might be easier than trying to determine & cut the proper angle.
In the second link you provided, the triangles are the same size as the ones used for the pinwheels. In the original, they are different sizes. The second one would probably be easier. |
What nice sashings. Thanks, Jan, for your diagram.

what is PP'ed? And is this entire quilt made of tiny pieces or are the larger blocks a printed fabric to look like tiny pieces? I don't think I could live long enough to make a quilt with tiny tiny pieces. LOLLOL Plus, I am still scared of triangles. I will make a quilt someday with all tiny triangles, just to get over that fear. LOL

I would imagine that it is probably pieced like the Dear Jane blocks. You make the block pieces a little larger than trim them down to the proper size, Good Luck.
PP is abbreviation for Paper Piecing when the pattern is so complicated, it is easier to sew it to actual paper which have the design printed on the paper. |

Check out Karen Sievert. She does the most marvelous things with prairie points, including putting them in the sashing. AND (above all) she makes it easy!!! Visit her at: www.theniftyneedle.com. Her books are published by Martingale.

When I looked at this photo, I noticed a horizontal join over the triangle in a couple. So i think the blocks look like a longer flying geese, with a strip added - like this - and a plain block either side. Hope I have helped.

Why not take the advice on the Picassa post and reach out to the guild and see if the person who made the quilt is still there and would talk to you about the pattern?
|
The maker of that quilt must have the patience of Job. Wonder how long it took to make and how many pieces in the quilt.

Jan, I really enjoy your wonderful solutions to problems! You are SO smart!

It looks like those triangles are elongated. I just found the "Easy Try-Mate" ruler today in a quilt shop that's selling out.
This is the ruler: http://www.equilter.com/product/8296...tri-mate-ruler Here's a video on the tri recs and the tri mate (tri mate is at about the 8 minute mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMpowniwtk8 I was excited to find this ruler as I LOVE that sashing! Thanks so much for posting this. |
