My co-worker and I are planning on making a full size quilt for our boss. He is always so good to us and he has a fishing cabin. I bought the material with fish, bears, eagles, bobcats and such. Really manly looking. Now I can't decided on a pattern other than DN9. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Warm Wishes is great for all and allows for a focus fabric

crafty_linda_b 09-10-2011 09:52 AM

Log cabin would be a good one. Or what about a streak of ligntening or rail fence? Or you could just cut the blocks big sqs so you could see the design. The 10 min block is a good one too. Be sure and post a photo of it when it's done!! We all love "eye candy" Happy Stitchin' crafty_linda_b

Try this one Center Stripes. It is on All People Quilt website. I did it for a friend's brother using ties from his father who past away. I think is very "manly" looking.

This is a great pattern for showing off focus fabrics and isn't very difficult.

I made a nice bear paw quilt with fishing, fly tying and cabins fabric - each bear paw had a theme like fishing, hunting, or cabin, etc. It turned out real nice.

That is a great idea too! Will check on that. I done the turning twenty twice now and really like the results. Love the warm wishes yet.

Dolphyngyrl 09-10-2011 10:03 AM

what about BQ2 since you have a focus fabric

loves_2_quilt 09-10-2011 10:12 AM

Rail Fence is nice too.

I did a Double Irish Chain for my brother and am doing a Trip Around the World for my nephew.

Wow! That is super! I see what you mean, like the fact you can see the pattern. and it does have the bear effect visual! Thanks! I think this may be it! My co-worker has no experience in quilting, so I will be the leader on this project.

Big squares so we could see the design sounds good. Bear claw may be more than I have time for at this point.. will check out streak of lightening.

deedum 09-10-2011 01:49 PM

I made up my mind, Warm Wishes! That goes along with the quilt as a gift! I always wanted to try this one! Will post a pick when done! Thanks everyone!

The Churn Dash pattern works nicely to frame up a focus fabric in the centre. YOu could switch them up with some of your fabrics.

Sorry, I don't hav ea link ... there was a great fishing themed quilt shown on here last week. The poster' had made the quilt for her SIL.

Bear paw and Flying Geese

Why not a rag quilt. Men seem to like those over other types quilts.

Its also alot easier to make than traditional blocks of any type.

4 in 4 patch would be good. I'm attaching a picture of one I did for my son using guy shirts. He loved it! If you don't want to recycle shirts for it, you could by plaids and checks.

QuiltE 09-11-2011 07:12 AM

ummmm??? did the OP not say she already had the fabrics purchased? and ask us for suggestions that would work for that fabric?

I just spotted this pattern, and thought it might work with the fabrics you are planning to use ....

Spilt 9 Patch is useful too.

This one for my Brother, can't remember the name of this pattern?

And this one for a special neighbour, Square in square:

The main thing to remember, I found, was my choice of fabrics, not too many floral!

I did the hunters star for my brother...

A bow tie quilt would be good. A rag quilt in flannel would also be nice. Jeanniebelle

This is a great quilt - I love the pattern and the fabrics were perfect - I might have to copy this one.

I like alternating blocks of Shoo Fly (or Hole in the Barn Door, another name for it) with Snowball block. The corners make nice paths through the quilts and the snowball blocks give you a spot for focus fabric. Good luck.

My husband is a Finish Carpenter, so the Carpenter's Star was a perfect choice for his birthday a few years ago. He loved the color choices (brown/rust/olive green), the design, the clean lines, the name of the quilt, and the fact that it was made by all four of his girls (the triplets each sewed a quarter of the quilt together). We made it in a day, and gave it to him for his birthday. I didn't have time to quilt it before he unwrapped it, but he folded it up on his chest and fell asleep on the couch with it. Ohhhh, sweet. I quilted it a few days later.

You can find the pattern here: http://www.craftsy.com/project/view/...ters_Star/3945

I made my husband a DP9 for our 25th anniversary. He loved it.

Lovely show of beautiful quilts. It would be hard to make a choice from the posted suggestions. Love the bear paw idea and I may use that suggestion for the greatgrandsons foot quilts.

Mommomjoann 09-11-2011 10:11 AM

Turning Twenty,it's great ,easy and fast!!!! Also made a Turning Sixteen( smaller size) for my granddaughter. Made the top in one evening!

littlenell7777 09-11-2011 11:02 AM

I'm with Vivian, Turning Twenty, that way your fabric shows up. I mean the bears, etc. lol

littlenell7777 09-11-2011 11:04 AM

Now that is a manly quilt. Just beautiful quilting and quilt.

ree-nee 09-11-2011 11:35 AM

I made a four patch square on point for a young man that has been extra good to my dh. It is a very easy and quick to put together pattern

This also came immediately to my mind :-).

I agree with the turning twenty, I use turning twenty again, the our prayer quilts for men. creams and beiges, or greys usually batiks because of the blendability.( if there is such a word.)
