Hi good Afternoon i was looking for a new pattern to try adn i found this image and really like the pattern i found the name of the large block Dutchmans windmill? i think. but the block that has all the little triangles in it that makes it all look like it is framed in does anyone know the name of that block and where can i find a pattern for it.

mike'sgirl 03-25-2013 03:31 PM

I don't know, but I like it. Will be watching to see what it is. Gina

QuiltE 03-25-2013 03:31 PM

I know the large block as Dutchman's Puzzle ... though many blocks have a variety of names, so Dutchman's Windmill would not be a surprise.

The "frame" as you have called it, is all HSTs placed like an Irish Chain setting ... very delicate look to it and quite effective done in the assorted colours. I have no idea if it has a proper name, but that's how it's made!

I'm going to remember that one!!

hopetoquilt 03-25-2013 03:32 PM

I also call it the dutchman's puzzle.

Tartan 03-25-2013 04:27 PM

Those little triangles are intriguing but I don't know the pattern. I wonder if they could be added as prairie points?

patti p 03-25-2013 04:27 PM

Oops sorry it is the Dutchmans puzzle, I have a pattern for that so you think it is a Irish chain? I will have to look that up.

Prism99 03-25-2013 04:55 PM

Single Irish Chain, but the squares are made up of HSTs with one of the halves the background fabric. I think. (Meaning that is the frame for the Dutchman blocks.)

Clever idea. Any block could be framed that way. Hmmmm......

As Prism99 stated, but there's 5 blocks , in 5 rows, and some of the blocks look like they were cut in 1/4's, with HST's on opposite sides of the block, some of the other blocks are just solid. I would draw a draft on graft paper and just figure the math. Good Luck. I love the layout.

bunniequilter 03-25-2013 06:37 PM

Not sure what it is but sounds intersting.

PaperPrincess 03-25-2013 06:47 PM

To make it easier to layout, the long side of the flying geese in the dutchman's puzzle should finish at a multiple of 5", like 2.5" X 5" or 5" X 10". If you go with the smaller size, then each of the squares in the 5X5 grid of the alternate block would be 2" square, which means that the HST's would finish at 1". Pretty tiny!

diamondee 03-25-2013 07:02 PM

I have a sneaky suspicion that the small triangles are the cut off half of the flying geese triangles. If you use the no waste flying geese units you wont get the cut off sections. I would need a closer look.

I agree with this! I thought of it after I went to bed last night. Ever dream about quilting designs???

OK - I have been playing with this! I really like the HST in the Irish Chain - I am thinking that this would be a great alternate block in a baby quilt! So this is what I played with ...

Assuming that the Duchman blocks are 12" square the blue HSTs are 1' finished (pretty tiny for my likes) so I went back and made the HSTs 2" finished in the green rendition. I like both and have saved both in my EQ lol!! Hope this helps.

I love that Betty likes to graph these out like I do...but she gets to use EQ with the grid already drawn! I have to work in Paint and create my own. But we came to the same conclusion -- the means justifies the end I guess. :D

Here's mine, with the math and instructions worked out. Use both of ours to create your quilt, but be sure to show it afterward!!

Jan in VA

You all know that I am the queen of snowballs, so note that I did not make the chain block with HSTs but used less piecing with rectangles instead.:)

eparys 03-26-2013 09:54 AM

Oh Jan - lol - you are so funny!! Actually I would probably make them the same way (half of a flying goose) - it was just easier to draw then out in EQ the way that I did. Your layout actually splits the difference in size between my two. May have the draft that one as well and save it!!

I agree - once you have made it, please show it off!!

Gannyrosie 03-26-2013 10:03 AM

Wow, Ya'll did it, great job. Me I would have sat there and tried to do it manually. I'm saving for my future, future , when I get better.

crafterrn1 03-26-2013 10:06 AM

Jan I love your way of approahing the small triangles. So much easier to handle that size. Love it! Luann

I tried to enlarge the quilt enough to see the little triangles and can't quite decide. What comes to mind from what I can see is that the white/little triangles are snowball blocks with just one corner piece.

patti p 03-26-2013 10:51 AM

OH My Thank You all for figuring it out for me. I will have to study these in detail and pratice a block or two, This message board is Awsome and I will post a picture when i get it all finished.or when i get a block set how i like it. I am almost done with the one i have in the works now, this is my next one to try. :o it will be a queen size for my 80year old Mom.

twinkie 03-27-2013 03:20 AM

Very interesting pattern. I hope you find it.

llweezie 03-27-2013 04:47 AM

I love this quilt and would also like the pattern !!

indymta 03-27-2013 05:28 AM

Thanks Patti P for giving us the picture and thanks to eparys and jan in va for working out the pattern. It really is a striking quilt and would be a great way to use up fabric pieces.

MargeD 03-27-2013 08:57 AM

It's Dutchman's puzzle but I know there are many different names for this block. To be sure go to Quilter's Cache where you can find it. Also if you use the Eleanor Burns' method for flying geese it would make it easier and the secondary block is mainly HST's. Hope this helps. It's a pretty quilt.

QM 03-27-2013 09:01 AM

Obviously, it is a row of half pinwheels with whole pinwheels at the intersections, but I have not seen a name for it. Very nice pattern.

JoanneS 03-27-2013 09:39 AM

Another reason to love this board! This is a lovely quilt, and now we all have the math worked out. All we have to do is pick our colors, cut and sew! Thanks to Patti P for posting the question and to eparys and Jan in VA for solving the math!

maryellen2u 03-27-2013 12:10 PM

I am so impressed with you ladies that can so easily do the math on these quilts, just from a picture! I wish you were here at my house to help me figure out how to cut for a 3D pinwheel quilt! God bless your mathematical minds!

NJQuilter55 03-27-2013 04:41 PM

Dutchmans puzzle is the name of the block. Look at it closely. If you break it down into quarters, it is basically comprised of 4 units of flying geese blocks(2 geese in each block). The top left set fly north, the top right fly east, the bottom right fly south and the bottom left fly west. It is very easy to make if you break it up into those smaller units.
Hope this helps!

sewbizgirl 03-27-2013 05:52 PM

Ooooh... pretty pattern!

Thanks from me also. Love this little beauty and really appreciate getting the pattern worked out for me!

I use Eleanor Burns flying geese rulers. The block is just flying geese, not HSTs.

I saved this thread but without going thru the whole thing again, I don't remember if this was ever answered. But tonight, browsing Connecting Threads, I found it and bought it! It's a downloadable pattern, called "Home Front Celebration" and descr says: "Celebrate this adorable throw quilt with its streamer-like bunting made of half-square-triangles tucked into a modified nine-patch, crisscrossing the quilt. The main attraction is the "Card Trick" or "Dutchman's Puzzle" blocks featured in the center and corners of the design"-has pattern for both.
