what is the plastic stuff that you can hang over a quilt top to plan painted accents
 

Hey y'all,
I'm looking for some kind of plastic that can be pinned over a quilt top to plan some painted accents. I think I saw a roll of something for sale on some quilting site somewhere but can't remember where.

Does anyone remember seeing anything like this?

If it is just for planning .... clear vinyl would be what you are looking for.
The type of stuff that can be used to put over top of a tablecloth to keep it clean.
It comes in different thicknesses and here (in Canada) I would buy it at a hardware store or some of the larger fabric stores that would also sell upholstery.

I have used pieces of it to "draw" FMQing designs on a quilt with a white board marker.
Then wipe off the marker and it is clean.
One drawback .... be very careful as the "dust" you create will have static electricity
and can easily hop onto your quilt!

Because of that, I try to keep my erasing minimal .... if there is much to be done, then I take it away from the quilt and give it a good wash/wipe to avoid any transfer.

Also, put blue painter's tape or something similar along all the edges so you don't accidentally paint past the edge of the clear vinyl onto your quilt top.

Yes, this is very good advice (I know this from not doing it!) and I am going right now to put some on

Agree .... the painter's tape is very helpful.
Just be careful with it too, as the dust can transfer with it too!




Another thing that can work .... plexi glass laid on top of the quilt.
Same static electricity concerns though.

Bonus -- you can use quilting rulers ..... so long as you can "see" through the lines on them!

Though you can buy a plain piece pretty low cost too.

There's also Quilter's Preview Paper. A teacher recommended it in a longarm class and I just bought some but haven't used it yet. It's more versatile, and more disposable, than the heavier plastic pieces. There are several videos online showing various uses for it.

The description is wrong - it's actually about 25', not 25".

Thanks Dunster- that’s the stuff I was thinking of, but on reading the description I think it is too narrow for what I need.

The clear vinyl that others have mentioned sounds like it will do the trick and thanks to folks who suggested putting blue painters tape on the edges.

I thought there was a 'craze' several years ago of folks using the Glad Press 'n Seal to do what you are thinking??? Not sure if it would work for you and probably no wider than what Dunster mentioned. But the painters tape - regardless of product is certainly a great idea!

Stencil plastic?
