What possible color can I use for the quilting?
1 Attachment(s)
My daughter picked out the wild fabrics in the quilt. They were in a (extremely poorly cut) jelly roll she picked up somewhere. This is the pattern of quilt she wanted, so I made it for her. The fabrics are all herringbone type patterns, ranging from white on white to lime green, bright yellow, purple, pinks, and grays. I have absolutely no idea what color of thread to use for the quilting! I plan on doing a FMQ nested paisley-style design to soften the angularity.
Suggestions? It seems like a cream or beige or light gray would be a cop-out. The backing and binding will be a dark charcoal gray small print (to give a border to all those colors!). Pam |
Maybe a dusty blue thread. Or possibly Aurifil's Marrakesh variegated (#3817).

I would go with a medium gray.

I would go with a light to med gray. You would be surprised how it just disappears into the quilt.

grey or hot pink.
|
I like the color combination on this quilt. It's also so unique.
|
Grey would be my first choice for a more subtle look, but purple is the choice if you want to highlight the quilting. Purple compliments all the colors in your quilt. You could use the same color as the purple strips or a shade lighter or darker.
|
I think grey would be my first choice also. However, if your daughter has a "favorite" color among those in your quilt, you might try that.
|
I would try to find a variegated thread that picks up some of the wild colours, I think it would be fun and would go well with the playfulness of the quilt. To me, thus is not a quilt that wants to be subtle and understated in any way.

Here's my 'out of the box' thought. If you want the quilting to really stand out, I'd be VERY tempted to use black. I know that sounds weird, but I think it would be really cool with all those really neat colors.

I'm thinking medium gray, as others have suggested. I think it would add movement and soften the angularity as you said, but still preserve the pattern itself.

since your daughter picked out fabric and design I would ask her to decide on the thread color
|
It sounds like your daughter likes fun and bright colors. I'd let her pick. Bet she says variegated! I would go grey if it were someone I didn't know, but clearly your daughter is bold and not afraid of color!
|
I'd be inclined to try a neutral veering towards yellow.
|
medium to medium dark gray. Wind some off of the spool and lay it over the various fabrics. I think you'll find it looks absolutely beautiful on everything but the white.

Thanks folks. I wish I had the confidence to do black or purple; I think that would be stunning. My very bright-loving DD would have loved it too. Alas, my skills are of the intermediate type. I think I will go with a silver metallic (I have used Yenmet metallics successfully before) with a light/medium gray in the bobbin.
I wish I could ask daughter, but this is a bit of a surprise. I cussed those poorly cut strips so many times, she undoubtedly thinks I never will finish it. I persevered for her sake, and I want it to be a surprise for her birthday next month. [Note to self (and warning to others): only use high quality precuts like Moda. This set was truly dreadful. Thank goodness she only wanted a jelly roll quilt since the pieces were worthless for anything else. Cut off grain, bowed in the middle, and not a consistent width. Umm. Is there anything else that could have been wrong?] Pam |
Oh, and I will think about Bree's suggestion of straight line quilting, maybe doing some ruler work right down the middle of the strips. I use a sitdown quilting machine so lots of long straight lines are painful though it would give a modern look to the quilt.
i admit this quilt is growing on me. It is even brighter IRL than the picture shows, and my eyes were glad I was mostly looking at the back during the piecing. I won't have that luxury while quilting :D Pam |

I usually take the top to a LQS and try various threads puddling the thread on the quilt.

I'm glad this discussion came up as I'm having a difficult time deciding on a quilt that's next in line for the frame and its various reds and purples with white as the background in the disappearing hourglass pattern. Border is a solid dark purples and the backing is a mottled dark purple. I thought about the grey but I'm leaning toward a pink now that someone suggested. I even looked at a pale green and/or yellow from my thread stash. Decisions, decisions.
I love your quilt with all those luscious colors. Can't wait to see how you quilt it. I'm sure whatever you do, your daughter will love it because it came from you. |
