I made this quilt/wallhanging for my children to keep and pass on to the grand children. Now I have three co-workers that want me to make one for them. How do you go about pricing when making quilts/wallhangings for others?

wow...this came out GREAT! No idea what to charge....its always hard to charge family members and friends....A few have asked me and I just said I have too many projects going on...

figure the cost of the materials. Figure how long it took you to make it. Figure how much per hour you are comfortable charging. You may find you have priced yourself out of a job. On the other hand the customers may be happy to get such a wonderful, unique piece of art.

Be sure you let them know, when telling them the price, how much materials cost and how long it took you to make it. Some people think you just whip up something like this in a weekend, they have no clue as to the work and time.

I make a habit of not making quilts for my friends, because I want them to stay my friends. I have found that most of your friends want you to "give them a deal", meaning they want you to do it for next to nothing.

Most non-quilters have no idea what it costs just for the material.

I only give my quilts away as gifts or for charities, that way, I know up front that all the cost and labor are on me.

Not a penny less than $350 (and add another $50 if you're going to send it out to be quilted - ithat way, if it costs $100, you're still going to make $300 to cover your time and supplies).

Don't sell yourself short. Remember, it's going to be family heirloom. Priceless. ;-)

And I would love to see a pic of your quilt straight on - you don't get the full effect when it's laying on the bed. I think it's fabulous.

Wow, that IS priceless. I agree with all the comments. I once read on here that you could charge by the square foot. such as a 55 x 75 = 4125 divided by 144 (12x12) = 28.6.

$15 x 28.6 = 429.68
$20 x 28.6 = 572.90.
etc.

Sounds like a lot, but this piece is PRICELESS!

I agree 100%. I get a blessing from giving them away. People ask me if I sell quilts. I don't even what to think about it. I do it for my own pleasure and don't want the stress involved in trying to please others.

I have made that one several times. If the person don't wish to spend too much I just do the tree with then names, no photos. It comes up too expensive when they order the photos and always have a hard time deciding which photos to include. I charge $80 for the tree with names alone if I embroider the names with the machine and $65 if I write them with a marker.
