What quilt block do you hate to make?

For me it's a toss up between Drunkard's Path (curves) and Log Cabin (all that pressing/trimming). Give me 4 at a time Flying Geese!

dunster 11-26-2020 11:56 AM

I hate square in a square. I can't get it right unless I paper piece it. On the other hand, I love making log cabin blocks. I cut the logs to size before sewing, so there's no trimming. I chain piece at least 10 at a time, so the pressing is done in a batch.

juliasb 11-26-2020 12:03 PM

I find a 9 patch the least liked for me. I have a ton of them made up for a quilt and have gone no further w it in over a year now. It will continue at another time. I would rather do a Drunkard's Path Juliemn1 than a 9 patch any day.

sewingpup 11-26-2020 12:06 PM

triangle in a square. They never seem to come out to exactly the right size for me.

Tartan 11-26-2020 12:29 PM

If I hate a pattern, I choose another I like better.

Onebyone 11-26-2020 01:43 PM

I don't like any quilt block with a lot of small units. Not worth the effort to me.

Synnove 11-26-2020 02:10 PM

Sunbonnet Sue. Ugh. Not sure if anyone even makes that one anymore. I love applique, but that one's too cutesy for me.

platyhiker 11-26-2020 02:15 PM

I've never actually made one, but I find the very idea of Drunkard's Path thoroughly unappealing, because of all those tight curves. I learned to sew with garment and costume sewing, so I can certainly sew curves - think set in sleeves - , but when it come to quilting, there are so many appealing quilts that can be made with straight line sewing. I am particularly charmed by the quilts that give the *impression* of curves with straight lines, such as the Storm at Sea design.

ckcowl 11-26-2020 03:02 PM

I am not a big fan of flying geese. It’s funny, I chose flying geese for my temperature quilt so making 366 of them- one at a time...ugh...but it’s turning into a great quilt. My thought was only one a day I can deal with that- having to make a bunch at a time for a border or something- no thank you

cgsumter 11-26-2020 03:15 PM

I dread anything that has 8 fabrics intersecting. I have tried spinning my seams, I end up making a mess.

SusieQOH 11-26-2020 04:22 PM

I'll never make a double wedding ring, this I'm certain of!

quiltingshorttimer 11-26-2020 05:20 PM

for me the sq. in a sq. looks so easy and gives me the most fits. But as far as blah! factor it's Sunbonnet Sue.

luvstoquilt 11-27-2020 05:26 AM

I love log cabins and courthouse squares. My iron is almost as important to me as my sewing machines.

Karamarie 11-27-2020 05:50 AM

I don't like curves and a lot of points.

Railroadersbrat 11-27-2020 10:27 AM

Right now, pinwheels are the bane of my existence. No matter what I try, three of the points match perfectly but that fourth point is always off. I know I shouldn't be so picky when it comes to that, but it doesn't make sense to me that three out of four are absolutely perfect but that fourth one is always off.

Favorite though is the nine-patch, can't get enough of them and I can whiz-bang a quilt out in no time doing them. Second favorite is the Double Wedding Ring, I had such a blast doing it and it was so easy that it almost became meditative. I could get lost for hours in that quilt and I do plan on making several more.

Olathe17 11-27-2020 12:08 PM

Double wedding ring. Curved piecing trips me up. I’ve never gotten a double wedding ring block right.

quiltingcandy 11-27-2020 12:21 PM

Usually when I am going to make a quilt I want to be happy doing it so will not do a lot of intimate work because it seems that if it will take too long to do it will never get finished. So like Tartan, if I don't like it I won't do it. Another reason I don't take requests for quilts. It's a hobby for me.

That's funny, I find the nine patch and even the 16 patch the easiest to make. I have trouble marching seams on a lot of other blocks. And no matter how hard I try I seem to always lose my "beaks" on my flying geese. LOL

IceLeopard 11-27-2020 05:33 PM

I haven't run across a block I hate to do, since like others if I dislike a block I just don't do it. For me, it's bias binding. I'll do it if necessary, but I don't like it at all.

sandy l 11-28-2020 04:04 AM

Any block with small pieces unless it can be paperpieced. That's why I make so many log cabins.

LGJARN52 11-28-2020 04:10 AM

I tried a simple thread spool block yesterday....can't get the points on the spool to match the thread portion of the blocks. Have 32 "threads" cut, just need to find a way to get the spool tops and bottoms to match up. Right now, this is the block I hate to make!

WMUTeach 11-28-2020 04:45 AM

I am so surprised the no one has mentioned my most despised block, flying geese. Yup, tried all the different methods and none work for me. I made one quilt that was all FG only because it was a labor of love. I don't love many others enough to go that way again. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png I have quilting buddies that whip those little blocks out perfectly in no time flat, but mine are always crooked and seldom fly in good geese formation.

It is interesting what blocks cause us to stumble or at least pause. I love square in a square and bias binding is easy peasy and I can spin points in my sleep, I haven't tried curves because I am scared. That is silly, I know. I leaned to put in smooth fitted sleeves in a garment when I was a teenager, why not a curve in a quilt block?

This all is a quick indication that we are unique individuals.

maminstl 11-28-2020 05:39 AM

Anything I can piece, I will happily do - paper piecing and applique are not my thing.

I have made a few Sunbonnet Sue quilts. I love the girlie-ness of her!

Jingle 11-28-2020 07:02 PM

I love Sun Bonnet Sue. I made a baby quilt with her for my first Great Granddaughter 13 years ago.

Motley 11-28-2020 08:17 PM

For me. Double Wedding Ring -- Old style. Every piece had to be sewed before it was fitted to the center. Ugh!! Momma made about 15 in 3 months but she invented (I think) the assembly-line quilt. Did all the little pieces into the shape needed and then attached to the large piece Then sewed the pieces together Ugh!!
Sunbonnet Sue I can Handle on a sheet and pillow cases but don't like doing the block quilts. Also do the Dapper Dan on sheets and pillow cases.

I actually love to do mostly embroidery quilts on solid background. I have 2 cats that like to help me, I do do some piecing but with these cats.....

lizzie3 11-30-2020 05:52 PM

I haven't found a block I despise yet, but I am confident I would hate paper piecing!

Irishrose2 11-30-2020 06:17 PM

I am not a fan of small pieces in a quilt, so I just don't choose patterns with them. Drunkard's Path - no problem - maybe because of my years of apparel sewing. Flying Geese - got boring doing enough for a quilt border, but it was the right one for a hunter's quilt. Double wedding ring - no, thank you.
Small HSTs scare me - I don't know why - maybe because I have trim my HSTs and that would be a lot of trimming. I looked the cutting directions for this year's Merry Mayhem and got stuck there.
Interesting question, Julie.

aashley333 12-01-2020 05:12 AM

The circle kaleidoscope in a square background is the main block I used. (I didn't even know it was called a block until I found this board.) Haven't made a block I disliked, but I'm new to this.

charlottequilts 12-01-2020 11:37 AM

For me, it's the big, modern blocks. I would like the graphic quality on a wall quilt, maybe, but for the throw size I usually make, it feels like shouting.

I am also part the group that finds the "square in a square" block to be fiddly and teeth-grinding.

hugs,
charlotte

Macybaby 12-01-2020 12:17 PM

I try to stay away from Y seams, if possible. I inherited a Grandmother's flower garden my Mom had started and I've got the "flowers" done and need to sew them with the background, and I have a real hard time getting motivated to work on it.

I don't mind doing the occasional Y seam, but having a quilt that is nothing but Y seams is not something I find that enjoyable.

I use to hate square in a square, until I stopped trying to do them "covered corners" method. Now I cut the inner square to size and sew overisize tirangles to it, then trim that down to the correct size.

sewbizgirl 12-01-2020 12:24 PM

The "Rambler" block... it's got geese flying on the diagonal, and the center 4 have to form a perfect square. Nearly impossible for me!

Cheshirepat 12-01-2020 02:53 PM

Wow, I'm glad I opened this thread - I thought it was just *me* with those square-in-a-square issues. I thought it would be so easy, and I felt like such a failure! Maybe I'll try my first PP and see if that works for me.

Jordan 12-02-2020 06:44 AM

I am not fond of any block that is paper pieced. My brain does not work on a backward way. I really get confused and it doesn't take me too much to get confused any more. Applique is not my favorite either
