Ok I just finished my first twin quilt top. It is called "lovely Lilacs" after the name of the border fabric. Still being new to quilting I have figured out how to peice well and how to sandwich well. I just don't know how to choose a quilting motif. In the 4 patch I was thinking of going with the old standby and doing in the ditch. but in the 4 inch square of lilac fabric I don't know what to put. I have some stencils but they are all for larger blocks. Here are pictures any help with a simple motif would be grately appreciated.

I would probably do a diagonal grid over the whole thing.

Very Pretty quilt top! Maybe some design with curves or circles? No matter what you decide it is going to be beautiful :D

Here is an idear...

Draw lines and quilt through your small blocks in the 4 up section of the top... green through green, white through white on the diagonal. If you draw them correctly, you should have a diamond shape in the middle of all those 4 inch blocks.

Hmmm that might not make sense... Draw a line from the midpoint of each side of the large blocks to the midpoint of the next side of the big block. You should have a diamond shape. Now extend those lines. It should go through the corners of the small blocks in one direction. Your overall pattern will be lots of diagonal crossed lines with nice sized diamonds in the middle of those large blocks.

Understand, or am I being thick as mud?

If was going to quilt this one, I think I would go with the flower theme, and do vines and flowers, centering the flowers in the plain blocks. If you do that, the quilt won't seem so "square" and will look even more feminine.

That's just my opinion!

That's really pretty dcurvy. Two of my favorite colors together! I really like Wendy's idea. I think it would suit the theme of the quilt and allow for some curvy lines to break up the straight line of all those squares.

Ok, what if I do a simple pinwheel in the lilac 4 inch square and the diamond idea in the 4-patch...with a leaf pattern in the border?

I would say WOW that sounds awesome :D and can't wait to see it :D :D :D

Beautiful quilt top!!! I think you won't know what you like until you try it. All of the ideas sound wonderful, but you're gonna hafta try it to see what you like.

Are you machine or hand quilting it? Such lovely piecing to the blocks, you can't be new to quilting.

Enjoy your quilting,
Sharon

I've been sewing for quite a long time so piecing is easy. Applique was another matter, did that with a block-month thing last year.

Based upon what I have heard I really don't have much room in my crowded little area to machine quilt the whole thing so it'll be a combination of machine quilting and hand quilting.

Just stitch the outline of a heart on them.
