I found Marsha McCloskey's "Quick Classic Quilts" at a garage sale a few weeks ago. I love the log cabin on page 60 called Sunshine-In-The-Window. It has a yellow center with a lot of light blues in one furrow and dark blues in the other. There is another one called "Grandmother's Dream that is one large (bed sized) log cabin. They used red, white and blue. This is an old book published in 1996 but if you love McCloskey or log cabins this is a book for you!

You will love this book. I have it and it is the best handquilting book I have ever seen. Great photos and even some design templates. Its a great book.

I haven't gotten them yet, but I want the Kansas City Star quilt books. There are 10 of them, so I'll get one at a time. They have all of the quilt blocks from the 30's and 40's.

sharon b 06-12-2010 03:48 PM

Does it count if the book was given to me ?

Singer sewing book, from 1959 I think .... It is older than me  LOL

Crazy Quilting, The Complete Guide, and Motifs for Crazy Quilting, techniques for embroidering and embellishing crazy quilts, both by J. Marsha Miehler. I haven't had time to do more than just browse yet but can't wait to get into them properly and get stitching.

Yesterday I went to what is touted as the biggest secondhand book sale in the world! It is run by a charity here in Aus. called Lifeline and I think they could be right, it was absolutely enormous. There were thousands and thousands of quilting and stitching mags. but I had a lot of them but did find one that had a particular pattern I had been looking for, plus a few more just in case. Mags were $A1 each.

Off the subject but also got several biographies and husband found an encyclopaedia of bread making. He's in the kitchen right now kneading a batch of sourdough.

The last quilting book I purchased was Ricky Tims' Convergence Quilts. My daughter and I are taking an all day class on the Original Convergence Quilt from this book.

Funny you should ask ... yesterday and the day before I received two more to add to my ridiculous collection. They are "Freddy and Gwen Collaborate Again" and "Mastering Precision Piecing" by Sally Collins. I thought I'd go back over some things that might be causing me to be less than perfect in my quiltmaking. Ha! Like that's ever going to change.
And I can never resist a book by Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran. They are GREAT together. And alone too. Either way, I love them. Their books are just wonderful!

And I forgot that while at the Carol Doak workshop I bought her 40 Bright & Bold Paper-Pieced Blocks for $5 from the lady right next to me. I guess she wasn't enjoying paper-piecing as much as I was. LOL[/quote]
I've had this book for a very long time. I wouldn't trade it for any other book. It's great. I had it turned into spiral bound at Office Depot and love it even more now that the pages are so easy to copy. If you like paper piecing, as I do, you'll really love it. You know Carol Doak is the Queen of paper piecing!!

Joann's Fabrics has my number, when it comes to buying quilting books. I'm always getting those 50% off coupons.
This week I bought Patchwork Table Runners.

Last week our local library had a book sale. All the books you could get into a shopping bag for $2.00. All were sewing & quilting books! ;-)

vickie1976 06-12-2010 06:10 PM

As a new quilter I have been buying lots of books on Ebay.

judee0624 06-12-2010 06:31 PM

I just bought Modern Comfort Quilts. It is fabulous. Everything is easy.

I'd love to read your review on this book.

I have only thumbed through it so far, but the reviews I have read rate it up there.

Bev, I will have to look into Collaborate Again.

I have Freddies House, one of my all time favorites. It is one of two I have turned into spiral bound.

I like this thread, hope it keeps going.

Eightlady - I recently purchased "Schnibbles Times Two - Quilts From 5" or 10" Squares" by Carrie Nelson, published by That Patchwork Place". I can't wait to try out the one on the cover - if I simply must buy some fabric and can't decide what, I usually end up with a charm pack so I really need this book.

PMY in QCA-IL 06-12-2010 08:08 PM

Pat Speth's collection of "Nickel Quilts" books uses 5" charm squares to make har quilts - many ideas there.

300 Paper Pieced Quilt Blocks by Carol Doak

teacherbailey 06-13-2010 02:54 AM

I bought Night and Day by Eleanor Burns recently and couldn't resist trying it RIGHT THEN....made a lime and dark purple wallhanging (no, there are no directions for a wallhanging but a table runner has 4 blocks and so does my wall hanging, OK?) and I LOVE the technique! It's a little wasteful on fabric but there are directions on how to use every scrap, so all works out! Highly recommend this one!

Freddie's House is wonderful! Take a look at Collaborate Again on Amazon.com. I think I did a review on it. At any rate you'll get a good idea of what it contains. It's a must have if you like the two authors. Their choices of colors are what turns me on so much.

A friend told me if you could have only one quilting book (there's a joke) it should be "The Quilter's Catalogue" by Meg Cox. I recently bought it and my friend was right.

MaryAnna 06-13-2010 06:23 AM

I've added 2 new books to my library. Adroation Quilts by Rachel W. N. Brown, and Quilted Devotions by Lisa Cogar. I've got to start on Christmas in July if I actually want to give quilted gifts on Christmas! I'm sure I'll be purchasing more books or patterns before July and lining up the projects! I've got 2 Eleanor Burns books coming as well (ebay purchases), Radiant Star & The Underground RR. I'll check out the books you've recommended as well, yes I'm a book nut as well as a fabric nut.
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

The first one has all the blocks you can imagine in every size you need.
I know there's quilterscache but this book has different blocks and easy
to browse. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. ;-)
The 'Sew One and You're Done' - they have some nice blocks and as the
title suggests you make one block and you have a quilt. The size of the
block varies from 45" to 56". Some look complicated but are quite easy.
I think I'm really going to enjoy both books as they both have lots of stars
which I am into right now. If you don't have these books, check them out
at your library if you can. I think they are worth it.

I recently bought the 501 blocks book as well and I love it!!

RuthiesRetreat3 06-13-2010 11:41 AM

This is not a new purchase but a rediscovered book that I've had in my sewing library since 1982. It's "1001 Patchwork Designs" by Maggie Malone. It not only has all these blocks, but in many cases shows the block done in different color/print variations to make it look completely different. She has two different color orientations for Attic Window, one that looks rather like a lightening storm, the other like a nine-patch that has been wonky-cut., yet both have the same size and shape of each piece. I've spent hours with it. I think I appreciate it more now than I did when I first bought it, especially since I've done so much more quilt-making since 1982.

vickie1976 06-13-2010 11:50 AM

Charm Quilts by Bev Donaldson 17 designs. I haven't seen it yet, ebay should be here this week. I've gotten/purchased 13 books on Ebay at good prices

Simple Start Stunning Finish-Valori Wells
Japanese Quilt Style are the last two books I have purchased

zkosh 06-13-2010 12:42 PM

Recently I have bought

One-Block Wonder Cubed
Magic Stack n Whack
Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts
French Braid Obsession.

Not too long ago I bought Serge and Merge Quilting and Simple Serger Sewing. I also got a couple of books on felting that I haven't tried yet.

I have Carol Doak's books, Ricky Timms' Convergences, and Judy Martin's books on my wish lists. I had to calm down and cool it for a while, if you know what I mean. I love books and have trouble resisting!!

Evy 06-13-2010 01:07 PM

I just bought Bonnie Hunter's "Leaders and Enders" book. Fantastic ideas. I've used a "leader for years but not in the way she does. Now I'm making myself use leaders and enders all the time. Great quilt patterns also.

I buy quilting books thru Edward R. Hamilton Bookseller Co.
PO Box 15 Falls Village, CT. 06031-0015
Shipping is 3.50 per order so order lots of books at a time.
Write for a catalog. He has all kinds of books and once you order a quilting book he will send a catalog with just needle work books in it. I have bought alot of books for as little as 2.99 and I wont spend over 5 dollars for any books.

A couple of MONTHS ago I purchased Turning Twenty by Tricia Cribbs and Turning Twenty...Again by TC. Haven't gotten to "do" anything with them except drool and dream. This afternoon I inherited loads of supplies from my deceased aunt who was a cake decorator and flower artist. OMGsh, when will I ever have the time to get to THAT? One of these days.................

Shiloh 06-13-2010 03:28 PM

I love The Quilter's Edge. I bought it a few years ago. I catalogued all of my books in an Excel spreadsheet. One sheet is strictly quilt books. I have a number of columns. One is Title, Next is Author, and then the next 3 columns are "key words" for finding something specific as I have over 100 books. When in a spreadsheet, you can sort by any column and thus find what you want quickly. One day, when I retire, I would like to do this with my ton of magazines. Will I ever live long enough?? sigh.

Hey Bev. I second that on Precision Piecing by Sally Collins. I refer to this all the time. I would like tochalenge myself to one of her quilts in the book.

Exactly what I'm planning on doing as soon as I've finished going over the entire book. There's a lot to learn here, even for a long time quilter.

I like the idea of making an excel spreadsheet. If I can stay off the board long enough I might even get it started. LOL

Yes, I strip therapy for Jelly Rolls and any other strips you may have. Also Loose Change by Claudia Plett is great for charm squares and fat quarters.
