what are 'scraps' to you

I consider anything under a fat 1/4 or linear 1/4 a scrap. anything above that is yardage to me.
so what do you consider to be a scrap?

Your description sounds right - but I must admit anything left over from making a quilt i consider a scrap. And since I tend to over buy, it can be larger than a fat 1/4.

Well.....i more consider scraps to be "odd" shaped or small pieces. I have clear closed boxes (about large shoe box size) with folded fabric pieces in them that are more or less than FQs, each box a different color group - i consider them and my yardage as my "stash".
Strips, small squares, other small bits go into the scraps category - hopefully if i'm being extra good - in separate appropriate bins!!

Like you, anything less than 1/4 yard is scrap to me.

Lynnie I agree totally with your description.

What I'm curious about is where y'all draw the line on scraps and trash. I used to hold onto anything wider than an inch or bigger than a postage stamp.

I consider everything under a 5-1/2 inch square scraps. If I can't get a square out of it, it goes in the scrap bin.

For me, if I have a piece under 1/2 yard, it gets cut into smaller pieces starting with 10" squares and going down to 5" squares....anything less is no longer a scrap, but trash...For most patterns, it will take more than 1/2 yard pieces.

i save anything i can cut into squares oe strips hate to waste fabric so expensive

SusanErler 03-08-2015 04:35 PM

Anything less than 1.5" gets tossed. Moving upwards, I'll cut leftovers to the largest size that the fabric allows: 2" strips or squares, 2.5" strips or squares, 3"... Anything 4" or more goes back into the "up to fat quarter" bin. You never know when you're going to want/need that weird border...

I don't want to cut down fabric prematurely. I would rather keep it in the largest size it will allow.

Yep, I agree, anything less than 1/4 of a yard goes into the scrap bin. I still use it in scraps quilts.
