One that hasn't been invented yet!

I had an old Bernina & replaced it with a Janome. Both had a 1/4" foot, but the Bernina's completed squares were so much larger than the Janome's that I couldn't use those made with the Bernina. I absolutly love my Janome Memory Craft & the foot is so easy to use!

I have a Bernina use the #57 foot and move the needle one position for a scant quarter. I would not want to sew without it.

When I use my Featherweight with my zipper foot it seems to be a very good 1/4 seam allowance.

Any machine where you can move the needle left or right will give you a scant 1/4". I have a Viking Lily that I always go back to for this. It is the most reliable of my 6 machines. BTW I got rid of the Bernina it was a PITA. Never could get it to do anything right and service was terrible. Noticed that the dealer I got it from has quit selling them. Very over rated in my book.

I think perfect seams are a combination of accurate cutting and finding the 1/4" "spot" on you individual machine. I have 4 machines, and ALL of them have a different needle placement and guiding line. It takes some time and lots of sewing on scraps to find it, but once you do, write down the needle position and mark the 1/4" line on your machine. Just like any other quilting skill...practce, practice, practice.

I don't know that one machine is better than another for the 1/4" foot, but I recommend; whatever machine you start making a quilt on, continue with that machine. Not all 1/4" are alike! I love my Pfaff's.

You control your 1/4" seam. I use the 1/4" foot, but move the needle to the correct position to obtain a 'scant 1/4" seam allowance'. My machine (Janome 7700 Horizon) has a memory feature that stores my setting so I don't have to reset each time. Moving the needle (that is, changing the 'width' of the stitches while in straight stitch mode) allows you the flexibility you need to achieve 1/4" seam on any fabric.
