what is shirting fabric

I just got the pattern for an omigosh quilt and it calls for 9 yards of white shirting fabric. I'm not familiar with that term. Can anyone explain

it's a plain white fabric, you could use a good quality bleached muslin. or a moda white, i'd stick with all 100% cotton.
see what is displayed in the picture of the quilt. something nice, that you can't see thru.

can you show us the design your working on. i'm assuming that's the back also, unless it's a white on white.

No it is not plain white fabric. It is a fabric design popular in the early 1900's. White background with small scattered geometric designs usually printed in black but could be in other colors , red navy etc. I usually associate with Gibson Girl blouses but most popular for men' shirts. Think barber shop quartets and handlebar mustaches. Very popular in reproduction quilts. I found one close up on the web that shows it in the quilt in detail. I don't believe the quilt would look the same with solid white. You can most likely find fat quarter packs of the fabric.

Why not go and buy charity shirts wash an you have multicolour shirt fabric, just ensure they are cotton shirts.

I bought shirtings for my "Oh My gosh" quilt. The back grounds on mine are, white, off white, and even tan, with very small scattered prints in all different colors even pink and green. I bought them on line from a quilt shop.

In my area very few shops carry the shirting fabric -- I want to add some to my collection as soon as I find it! Good luck with your quilt -- Ohmygosh is stunning!!

Thanks indeed!! Just looked at a quilt today in a magazine that called for assorted white shirting fabrics...didn't know what that was...now I do! Always learning something on this board!!
