What should I make with this fabric collection

I have a FQ of every fabric in this line Indigo by Henry Glass
http://www.rivercityquilts.com/fabri...ues-fabric.cfm

They offer a free pattern but it looks so dark. How can I feature these unique prints, but add contrast and lighten up the overall appearance. Thanks for your help.

A silver gray or perhaps a nice red will brighten the collection. Treat those fabrics as your black background in Hunter's Stár blocks? I love using textured darks instead of solids as backgrounds.

ManiacQuilter2 04-21-2015 04:44 AM

WOW!! That is a very dark looking collection. Red does work well with blacks. I would lay out the fabrics and start adding red, lighter grays and maybe a white or two.

Maybe HSTs with white? It's a beautiful collection. I can see hsts with the blue halves all on the same side, a triangles quilt.

quiltstringz 04-21-2015 05:49 AM

I think I would use it in a 2 color quilt - blue & white, blue & yellow. I like the half square triangle idea, then you could put them into a log cabin type design.

huskyquilter 04-21-2015 06:50 AM

I love that collection! I would either do a sailboat quilt block with those as the sails, or an orange peel quilt as the peels.

I love this idea of the background for the hunter's star. you could call it "night sky"

Your fabric reminded me of a bag pattern I have that uses strips of the same type of fabric:

http://pursepatterns.com/index.php?m...oducts_id=1416

Maybe you could made a bag out of the left over scraps. They are ironically the same colors.

Are there any "lights" in this collection?

I think the prints are interesting - and I would try to pick out a pattern that would showcase the individual prints.

I would try to get a "light" that blends with the light part of those prints for contrast. I think white white might be too stark of a contrast for my taste.

SueSew 04-21-2015 10:15 AM

The prints are beautiful but very dark - sometimes indigo-style prints have more white in them. I would either fnd some similar which have more white, use more of the lighter ones so the darker ones stand out, or just go for white and solid navy for contrast. HST's? If I were to add another color I would add a clear mid-green, on the blueish side. Not sure. I didn't go grazy over the Glass pattern either when I peeked at it.

Thanks for the ideas. I have looked at this fabric a long time. It's time to get it cut.

Stitchit123 04-23-2015 02:27 AM

The palette is endless with dark fabrics. I would steer clear of the gray's - tan's and white. But Pastels or Brights would work beautifully. I can picture these with the brilliant blue and aqua Batiks in a Snails Trail.

Which one is the free pattern? I did not see that offered. Marcia

Carol34446 04-23-2015 06:13 AM

I love yellow, so I would go with yellows or yellow and white to lighten it up.

luana 04-23-2015 06:41 AM

Marcia, These are the two patterns offered.

I'm getting ready to make this in navy blues and white it's from Bhg quilts and gifts. 2008

Geri B 04-23-2015 06:52 AM

I like billi's idea....that certainly is a dark collection....needs white to bring out the intricate patterns in the fabs.......

lynnie 04-23-2015 07:03 AM

how about a light beige to brighten the whole thing up a bit.

madamekelly 04-23-2015 10:27 AM

Using idigo, I would audition a tan or harvest gold tone like blue jeans? That is a classic look. White would really pop!

I love this quilt also, I have all the fabrics to make it, it would be wonderful in those Indigos! I particularly like that they are reversible.

mammaduck 04-23-2015 12:59 PM

Could you work it into a "Storm at Sea" quilt?

luana 04-23-2015 04:40 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions. Billi, I love that pattern. I threw them in the washer today with a color catcher and there was not one bit of transfer of color. Makes me feel more comfortable using white.

solstice3 04-25-2015 03:19 AM

Stunning fabric. Incorporate some lighter fabric or some dark on light if you can find something similar

Auj 05-23-2015 11:31 AM

What about a Log Cabin with either white or creams as the light side and a red center?

lynnie 05-23-2015 11:47 AM

I made my son an Asian themed quilt and used similar colors. I added a beige to pick up the lighter color, it really popped.

Girlfriend 05-23-2015 08:35 PM

Luana, what pattern did you finally decide on? My son just asked me to make him a navy blue and white quilt...

Tom W 05-24-2015 10:34 AM

I'd use an off white, bright white, silver or icy blue with those fabrics to make them pop... the secondary color would depend on pattern.
