What Size Baby Quilt?

What size do you prefer for a baby quilt? Crib battings are usually 45" x 60", but do you feel that is too large? Would you prefer something in the 36" x 45" size? Or is there another size that works best? Any and all opinions are welcomed! :)

I do not like anything more narrow then 45 inches. The smallest I make is 45x45 up to 50x60.

I make baby quilts square anywhere from 36 -48 inches. I tell the new mom to place iton the ground when baby wants to crawl or not be held. It makes a great way in a crowd for everyone to see the baby but not hold the baby. It also makes a great "clean" place to change a diaper in a pinch.

I usually make baby quilts more in the 50 x 60. I feel they get more use from them (and I rarely get them made when the babies are tiny).

I make most baby quilts about 45 x 60". If you buy a baby quilt panel, it's 36x45", and I always add borders around it, usually 5-6" all the way around, sometimes 1 border, sometimes several borders adding up to 5-6".

I figure that the kid can carry the quilt around with him/her for a lot longer if you make it a little bigger.

For kids 10-15, I'll make a double bed sized quilt. I figure it will fit on a twin bed, hanging to close to the floor. Or depending on who it is, I might make a lap quilt, or maybe just a fleece blanket 60 x 72"

I made some double flannel blankets for babies and I made 45"x45" and they seamed big enough. I would not go any smaller then this.

I make my crib quilts close to 45" x 60". If I make them just under 45". one width of fabric will do for the backing and I won't have to piece it. I also think a child will be able to use their quilt much longer if it is a little bigger.

I have for years made them 45"x 45".

I usually like my quilts rectangular rather than square. I like the width to be inside the 45 inch fabric width so I can use one piece backing, so about 40X50.

I go for the sort of sizes mentioned here, but will consider where the recipients live - some British houses have small rooms, so I make sure I stay within a size that will be usable on their floors.

My last two were 40x60. One was purchased as a baby shower gift and the other was for my niece that is just two weeks old. It will be plenty big enough for quilt awhile. I plan to make her another when she is big enough to have a favorite color. :)

For me, I guess it depends on how much work I'm putting into it and how I think it will be used. If I'm making a quick blanket for a baby, I go 36"x42ish, knowing it will be used with a bunch of other blankets in the early days. If I think it will be kept for a toddler blanket, then I go bigger. When my kids were infants, I didn't care for big blankets at all, but I did see that the babies outgrew them.

I think there is no wrong way...

The ones I have made were between 40x60 or 45x60. I like them long enough to fit crib nicely or to lay on the floor when the baby is old enough to start to crawl or begins to roll over.

I usually make all my baby quilts 45x60 unless I buy a panel piece, that way they can use it in a 6 yr crib or for a longer time.

I have done only a few but I always thought that the standard size was 45" x 36". After reading the comments, I think that bigger would be better.

Thank you for all the input! It seems like the most popular size is just under 45" wide (so the backing need not be pieced) by 60" long. I asked as I'm working on a design for a new baby quilt, and the way I have it right now it comes out to 40" x 55". So I think size-wise I'm in the right ballpark! Thanks again for the help!

I think that is about the perfect size

Holice 11-01-2013 06:39 PM

After reading these posts I am going to start making them larger. Mine have usually been 36/45

Pat625 11-01-2013 09:29 PM

I usually make them 50X60 or there about. I think of making it a size that will not be outgrown in toddlerhood
