I make my baby blankets about 40 inches square. I tell the new parents they are good floor cloths when baby wants tummy time. I'm don't try to make it the correct baby mattress size because of recomendations not to put blankets in with the babies.

I make receiving blankets 1m (approx. 40") X WOF (approx. 42") and I serge the edges (quick and easy). My crib quilts are about 45" X 60".

for little babies I size something that will drape over the car carrier or over anyone's lap who wants to hold the baby, or make a place for the baby to lie on the carpet. I wait until they are toddlers to do the bigger quilts.

Mine are the same as Jackie's. I've never found little quilts very useful. Perhaps it's because babies in our family seem to be the 10 lb variety and they aren't little even at the beginning.

My friend was always making receiving blankets. After prewashing the flannel, I think she sewed the 36"x44" pieces together and turned them inside out. She would do some type of decorative stitch along the inside of the edge.

Yes, I noticed the commercials on TV stating NOT to have anything in the crib. No bumpers, no blanket, absolutely nothing!! Preprinted baby panels are 36" x 44" but the size of ANY quilt depends on the size of the block you use.

For the receiving blankets (still the correct term, by the way :) ), I say the bigger the better! Last year when my baby was born I was disappointed to find that the store-bought blankets are much too small for swaddling a growing baby. 30x30 or smaller are great for other things (burp cloth, toss over car seat, etc.), but WOF or larger is much better if you want to actually wrap the baby up!

As others have mentioned, most quilts won't be going in the crib anyway, so go with any of the above-mentioned sizes that suit you. :) If anyone wants alternative ideas for a handmade baby gift, I suggest sleep sacks! The nice ones are expensive so I "upcycled" an old fleece jacket to make one, and even though it works great, it looks really frumpy. I would have been thrilled if someone with more sewing know-how made a pretty one for my baby!

I have done quilts anywhere from 35" to as long as 55" depending on the pattern or what size borders I add!! Sometimes I add a larger border for a quilting design to fit!!! I just make sure it is smaller than a crib size batting!!!

I make a lot of baby quilts and usually make them about 42 or 43 x60, so I don't have to piece the back. Most people that buy the baby quilts from me like the larger ones rather than the little square ones.
