What size needle do you use when FMQing
 

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone uses a 80/12 needle to FMQ. For example, if your quilt has a cotton pieced top, Hobbs 80/20 batting, and cotton back. I usually use a 90/14, but forgot to change my needle and had a 80/12 in and it FMQ'd really well. Is using a 80/12 common or is it best to stick with the 90/14?

I use size 12 for everything, so, yes, I FMQ with a 80/12.

I match the size needle to the size thread. If using 60 wt thread, would use 70/10 or 80/12. For monofiliment I use a 65/9 microtex. The hole in the fabric made by the needle should be filled with the thread. If using too large a needle, the hole is too large for a fine thread to fill it.

Whatever works for you, works! I find what works best for me is size 16 and I use topstitch needles.

80/12 works very well for me, so if it works for you I say go for it!

Its dependent on how thick your thread is, the thicker the thread the higher the needle you will use

If I'm using Hobbs, I use either an 80/12 or 90/14. Anything thicker and I use a size 16 jeans needle. Just the way I quilt, I guess, but I tended to break needles which isn't good for either me or my machine.

I use an 80/12 Titanium needle from Superior Threads, works just fine and lasts a lot longer than the regular needles. Whatever works for you, use it.
