what size quilt for DH

2 Attachment(s)
I want to use this panel to make DH a quilt to use in the recliner. What size would work for a 5'6" guy? This panel is 35x44". I want to back it with flannel. I also want to get it DONE. LOL I was thinking of black and yellow 4 patches or fussy cutting the 2nd fabric. Between weight loss and inactivity due to health issues, he is cold now. I've never made him a quilt before because he was never cold!

Any ideas are appreciated!

I like to make lap quilts the length of my couch. That way they can be used for a nap on the couch and for sitting in a chair. I would rather it be a little long then too short. Great panel!

Can you have him get in the recliner and measure for the quilt? Maybe give him a blanket and see if it's the right size, if not add or subtract. Don't forget he may want to tuck it well under his feet to keep them warm. Extra length and width is always nice. I love your panel.

Just checked the tractor-themed rag quilt I made my DH. He is about 5'7 or so. The quilt is 66 inches long. He uses it in his recliner and is able to tuck it up under his feet. It is only 36 inches wide and covers him OK. A little wider wouldn't hurt, if I were doing it over again. As it was, I had to go back and add another row so it would tuck under his feet. Luckily, I had enough fabric left and it wasn't hard to add length to a rag quilt. Good luck on your project, I'm sure he'll love it.

I have a lap quilt that I made for myself. I am always cold so I backed it in flannel and used wool batting. I love it.

I just finished making a quilt with that same panel though my matching fabric was different. Was for a 20+ young man. I made it 86 X 88 inches but was for his bed not lap sized

I would say no smaller than 50 x 70. My husband likes to have the blanket tuck under his feet and lots on each side. My DH is 5'9" so I make mine at least 72 inches long. Better too big than too short.

Thanks everyone! I'm thinking about 55 x70. I might look into the wool batting too.

I like to make my lap quilts at least 4'x6' and I find that a bit bigger is better, up to 5'x7'.
