What size quilting thread?

I'm almost sure I remember this being discussed before, but I can't find it using the search feature.

Which thread brand and weight do you recommend for machine and hand quilting. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I recommend you use what ever weight and brand of thread gives you the look you want. I use Aurifil and Prescencia for piecing and Aurifil, Mettler, King Tut, Wonderfil, and a couple of others in weights from 50 down to 28 for quilting. Sometimes I want a finer thread that doesn't show too much and sometimes I want a bolder thread that stands out more. Experiment.

I usually use a 50 wt thread...my favorites are King Tut (from Superior Threads) and Aurifil. But I just finished two twin-size quilts for young boys (very colorful) and used a variegated 30 wt poly from Superior Threads on the top and a 50 wt neutral for the back. Very nice to work with and I wanted the stitching to show up a little more on these quilts. Basically...whatever you like.

Thanks for your responses. Do you quilt with 100% cotton? I'm practicing right now with Gutterman polly, but seems like I've read to use cotton.

i buy most of my threads from either Superior threads or Connecting threads- for quilting i use machine quilting threads in weights from 30wt-to 60wt---once in awhile i use a silk thread- depends on the project-
for hand quilting i am more (adventurous) and depending on the project may use wool thread, perle cottons, or any other thread that gives me the outcome i am looking for.

Thanks for posting this question! I was wondering the same thing. I think I am ready to try out the walking foot I got for Christmas.

I just got a aurifil 50 100% cotton, and put in my 10 year old Janome. I love it. Thank you all at QB, I learn so much from you all. I am glad I bought 4 spools, I am going to try it on my hand piecing. Waiting for my Connecting Threads thread, somehow I think Aurifil is going to win for me. My first time with 100% cotton, love it, love it.

I use Coats and Clarks Duel Duty Plus for my hand quilting. And, my DH uses it on his machine to piece with. Works just fine. Oh, and we pay $1.35 for 325 yards.

I use cotton fabric so I use cotton thread. Seems more compatible somehow. It's up to you though.

I keep it simple. Since I am not making heirloom quilts or entering them in contests I use whatever I have on hand. I am not that good at quilting so I just like to have the thread color blend with the fabrics. I use the make due method work for me and use almost anything.

I do like to use king tut on the LAM. The machine likes it.
