What size square do I use??

Not sure if I am in the right place, if not, hopefully this will get moved to the right place. My problem is that I am putting a quilt together, of 12 inch blocks, and I am setting them on point. So, I have these triangle pieces that I need to fill in around the edges, and the 4 corners. I know that there should be a formula, about cutting a square so much larger, and then cutting it into a triangle. Can anyone help me out? I could probably use newspaper, and come to a close answer, but if there is a formula, then I can write it in my book for future reference. Thanks for any help you can provide.

You should be able to find your answer at Quiltville from the On Point Quilts link below:
