What is the standard finished size of a queen quilt top?
 

I am in the process of making my DGD a queen size double Irish Chain quilt and was wondering what size you all make your finished queen tops.

Mine usually get to be 96 X 105. They don't always start out to be that big but that's how I roll! LOL A queen size mattress is 60 X 80 so you have to decide how much over hang you want and all that to that measurement.

There is no standard. Mattress depths vary, bed height from the floor varies, etc, etc. Measure the bed you want it to fit and make it come out close to that measurement.

I agree with the Scissor Queen. Measure. You can add all the borders you want.

the charts i have show a queen quilt as 88"x94"---then you would want to determine how much of an over=hang you want- some of the newer mattresses are 15-16" high= if you want the quilt to drape down the sides past the mattress you need to add for that- a 15" mattress would mean adding 30" to the width (if you wanted it to cover the mattress sides)---best to have someone measure her bed and determine how far down they want it to hang over- and if you want a 'pillow tuck' you need to add in for that too.

I make mine at least 90x90. I do not make them long enough to go over pillows like a bed spread but I do want enough drop so that the cover the mattress.

Used to make mine 90x108, but we got a new mattress and now it needs to be bigger. Let's see....60x80 for the mattress. 17" each side of the mattress depth. Another 6" each side for the box spring, since we don't have any bed skirt. That makes the quilt to fit our bed 106x110 or so. Those new mattresses sure are deep.

it depends more on what YOU like! the more drape, the heavier the quilt becomes.
What size can you possibly quilt if you do it on your own machine, what size can you hand quilt comfortably, what size batting did you plan to use? What is the largest your quilter will do if sending it to be machine quilted!
So many things to take into consideration.

HOWEVER, if entering in a show be sure to use their guidelines or it might be miscategorized!

that makes it a bedspread, not a quilt! Quilts are generally a bed "topper". Due in part to their weight!

I make my quilts to fit the bed its going on, with room to spare. I like it to hang longer on the sides - nothing worse than a quilt that doesn't cover you when you're in bed & its cold! You're doing the quilt, its your rules and what YOU want that matter. Post a picture when you're done, please! Sounds wonderful.

I agree, measure the way you want it and add a few inches for quilting & washing/drying shrinkage. I usually lose 3-4" overall on a queen and I usually throw mine in the dryer on low.

Me too. Seems there is no "standard" and some people like more overhang than others, or adaptations for footboards etc.

A quilt is a quilt, is a quilt no matter what size. Make it large enough to fit and cover the size that you measure on the bed. It will be beautiful when you are done :-)

Thank you everyone for the advice. Since I am fairly new to all of this, it has been extremely helpful. I will try to post pix when it is completed, may be a while as I am only about halfway through.

I like to make quilts for my queen-size bed at 104"-106" square. With this size I get the same drop all-around. This allows for some shrinkage after washing, I plan for 5%, and the quilt to drop to the top of the wooden rail. Also, with a square quilt my thoughts are that if/when, (it's never happened, LOL) my husband makes the bed, any way he puts the quilt it will always be right.

I usually make my queen size quilts 90x108 , but depends on how far off of the floor it is. I am sure she will love it what ever size it is.

And my packaged (pre-cut) batting is 90x108, something you might consider. I'm going to have to add some pieces to my batting, since my (make it up as you go along!) quilt top will be larger than that.

According to the AQS....the measurements used for a queen is 84 x 92

twin 62 x 87
full(double) 78 x 87
King 100 x 92

we use these measurements for all our long arm quilting ...keeps everything standardized

I just realized that I did not thank everyone for their answers to my question, so thank you. :) It wound up being 82 X 92 as I ran out of fabric at that size and stopped. Having it quilted now.

90X90 is what I usually aim for thos bigger is fine, too. But 90" square in my minimum queen size.
