I taught myself quilting several years ago when my daughter asked me to do something for her with her old hard rock cafe t-shirt. I had a sewing machine, and as a teen had made my own clothes . . . So how hard could this be?? I have made about 15 quilts, most are non-traditional but I got tired of paying someone to do long-arm quilting. Then at my husband's suggestion, I joined AQS and a new world opened up. . . FMQ? Different threads ??? And then I found this site. I took a class in FMQ and for someone who never liked straight lines, I found not seeing where I was going quite over my abilities. . . But I am still 'doodling' on scrap muslin and Batting. So here is my question. When you are piecing do you use regular thread or go to size 50?? I need some help here please

I just use regular thread for piecing. Most say to use 100% cotton with 100% cotton fabric, but I don't always. I do use cotton machine quilting thread when I FMQ on my Babylock. I haven't been able to find the size of the thread I use. I use Coats & Clark and even went to their website with no luck.

I normally use Coats & Clark All Purpose or Dual Duty thread for piecing which is supposed to be 50 weight but seems more like 60 weight. For quilting I've used the same, serger thread which is definitely less than 50 weight, Maxi-Lock Swirls--50 or 60 weight equivalent, Coats & Clark Machine Quilting thread 50 weight, Robinson Anton Cotton machine quilting thread 50 weight, and Sulky Blendables 30 weight. I have a couple spools of King Tut 40 weight but I haven't used them yet. I loved the Sulky Blendables but they're expensive and the King Tut seems very similar. I have also used Superior Signature for piecing & machine quilting because someone gave me a gift set of neutrals and I didn't have anything else handy at the time. It is also very nice, 50 weight I believe.

it really depends on your fabric...and what look you want...
for everyday piecing I love Guterman or Mettler silk finish, or Aurifil.
For quilting, I like Aurifil bobbin weight in the bobbin and signature 40wt on top.
For thread play I use Materpiece bobbin and then a wide variety of threads for the top...
