What are these?

I was given some fabric and these were in it. They are made of a very heavy flannel and have 2 layers of fabric on each square so they are very thick. I'm not sure what someone was making, I guess these are the extras. There are 18 plus 4 more squares of just fabric which you see at the bottom of the picture. Each completed piece is 6 1/2" square.

So is there anything I can do with these? I can't imagine sewing them together in the normal way since the corners would have a total of 8 layers of very heavy weight flannel.

Thanks!!

If they are flannel, they would make a nice rag quilt.

KenmoreGal2 01-11-2016 09:16 AM

Ah, never made one of those. But there are only 18, must be what's left. If they were regular weight, I'd probably make a table runner out of them. But these are so darn heavy....

dunster 01-11-2016 10:00 AM

Could they have been meant for chenille?

tessagin 01-11-2016 10:59 AM

I would put matching fabric together and see what you've got. Go from there.

craftsbygloria 01-11-2016 11:45 AM

Could you bind them off and use them for coasters.

mike'sgirl 01-11-2016 12:35 PM

Dunster probably nailed it. I vote chenille as well.

I don't think chenille...they're only 6 1/2" squares...I vote for rag look

When I first learned to make rag quilts, I was taught to sew 2 squares of flannel together across the center and unfold them to yield a 2-layer square with both sides showing the right side of the fabric. I'm sure they were for a rag quilt.

Sew them together for a pillow?

KenmoreGal2 01-11-2016 01:48 PM

I like the pillow idea! My sofa cushions could use a new look. Now I have to figure out how to do a rag quilt. Thanks!!

She might have been starting some sort of rag quilt.

These look like they were left overs from a rag quilt

ljptexas 01-12-2016 05:50 AM

Rag quilt, I'm thinkin' too...

maviskw 01-12-2016 06:35 AM

Rag quilt sounds like a great idea. Make it as big as you can. We have a "cat blanket" which just covers the lap for our cat who still has his claws.

unclefreckles 01-12-2016 07:15 AM

Could they become pot holders?

Becky's Crafts 01-12-2016 07:22 AM

If they're really heavy, perhaps they were for making bags? The super heavy felt would be to give it body... just thinking...

Rose Bagwell 01-12-2016 08:02 AM

My 1st impression is for a rag quilt. worth a try, you could make a rag purse/tote bag combination.

KenmoreGal2 01-12-2016 08:10 AM

Thanks for all the replies. I looked up how to make a rag quilt and decided it's not something I'm interested in pursing right now. In order to fit all my new fabrics on my shelves, I am giving some away. I've added these items to the give away pile. I included a description of what they are and what can be done with them based on your comments. I'm giving them to a new sewist so hopefully she'll make something nice with them.

maviskw 01-13-2016 05:29 AM

You are wise. I'm sure she'll be tickled pink to get some nice things. Just like Christmas.

Pot holders????

shasta5718 01-13-2016 08:17 AM

Make a doll quilt, won't have to add batting.

klswift 01-13-2016 10:06 AM

If they are thick and heavy, could they be used as a base for casserole carriers? table runner or placemats? Perhaps put together as you would a quilt as you go project so that you are sashing them together rather than seaming them.

What a cool idea! Thanks for sharing.
