What are these templates for?
1 Attachment(s)
I came across these templates somewhere but cannot remember where. What are they used for? Marking a quilt top? cutting out fabric? Marking Baptist fan pattern on top for quilting? Hmmmm
I know someone here on the forum has an answer. |
Wish I could help you. I am curious too.
They look like Dresden patterns.
before the acrylics a company called Ardco made aluminum templates, I think I still have an applecore.

Designing parts of circles with uncommon measurements?
Take the 45° and add the 15° to either side. 15 and 45 are 60° but with the added 15° you wind up with 75° arc which is not common. Draftsmen would use a protractor, a quilter might not. I could see using the 45° as a main template in a dark color and the 2 15° as a lighter color making a different looking flower. That might not be so easy to measure. I could have some fun using something like that to lay out quilting, too. All the unusual with half the work. |
Would they be template for a Mariner's Compass pattern?
Can you post a clear picture of what the 120 template says?
Maybe for doing scalloped borders?

I googled "Extra Special Products" and found that slogan on other products, but found nothing that looked like these. |
My guess is that they are for piecing and squaring up fans and Dresden plates. You could also trace around them to mark quilting lines.
A bit like 'what can you see in those clouds - or ink blob'. I can imagine using them for odd shaped New York Beauty blocks.
But no, haven't seen them before. |
They are angles. Maybe for making triangles? I'd just use them any way that makes sense to you.
Any finished shape based on circular segments. Dresden plate as an example.
I have a set, but I've never used them and really don't know what they are for. Mine are joined together with a bead/ball chain. I've had them for 30+ years, just used them for a decoration in the sewing room. Hope someone can enlighten us!!!

I was doing a project for my mother and ran across these templates. They are used for scallops.
Your tools might be to make scallops as mentioned above and made by the ARDCO company. But I would like to mention that a fiber artist named Cheryl Phillips of Delta, Colorado has developed and marketed templates based on these angles for quilt making. She has written books and does workshops with her templates and patterns. She does a beautiful trunk show as a part of her presentation. The books are readily available. Just for fun, google her and check out her website.

As a former math teacher...here is my guess. A circle is based on 360 degrees and these temples are all parts of a complete circle. There would be three 120 templates to equal 360. There would be four 90 templates to equal 360. There would be six 60 templates. There would be eight 45 templates to equal 360. There would be24 15 templates to equal 360. These parts could be traced..add on the seam allowance...then sewed together to make beautiful circles. This is one way I would use them!

Sewnoma, yes you are right bout the printing on the large template.
Mawluv, these were joined with the ball chain too. I just took them off to take the picture. Maybe scallop edging is in my future. If not, they will join the rest of the gadgets that aren't used but at one time I thought they would be useful. LOL |
I never have seen anything like these templates before.
Look at your cutting mat....
THE 45 degree the bottom part of a fan block
The 60 degree would be good for Stack n Whack/Kaleidoscope quilt.
I'm with Tartan....

They are called Quilter's Charming Angles. The package I have says most common angles used by quilters, great for checking angles on paper patterns, helpful designing tool, easy to carry and use, and useful with geomatic (not sure what they mean by that)
mimisue -- I'm with you. I think they would make beautiful circles! I think mixing them up tomato a circle would work as well ... but I'll let you do the math! LOL
These templates are very interesting. I would think they could be used to quilting and perhaps you could make something sweet using these templates. If you have a marker, a permante one, you can mark them and use them for dresen plates. That's a good idea.
I also think they are just pieces used to verify/check an angle.
I would try to send an email query to Extra Special Products to see if they can help you
