what are they called?

New quilter. Yes you can find anything on the web IF you know what it's called. They are blocks sometimes with a square or rectangle in the middle with what looks like various width strips, on two or all sides, then squared up.

This doesn't even make sense to me hope someone can help.

Square in a square?

Could it be the French Braid pattern? French braid sometimes start with a square of fabric as the center and then strips and little squares are added on both sides of the square to form a long strip.

Curvy log cabin? Two sides are wider strips than the other two sides.
