what is a thimble cage for?
 

I stumbled across this http://www.smallwondersjewelry.com/c...thtml/th01.htm and can't figure out what you would use it for. I understand the thimble sits inside it. Is it just decorative, or would you wear it on a chain and therefore keep it handy for use? But it seems like it would be such a pain, you'd have to take it off the chain in order to open it and remove the thimble. Please, someone explain?

A friend had one. She used it to keep her thimble in. It was decorative but also practical. Hers you didn't have to take it off the chain to get the thimble out. She had a very decorative thimble that she used. I thought the thimble and cage were lovely.

my thimble wouldn't be very pretty in a cage.

Some have expensive thimbles and this would be a safe pretty place to keep it so it won't get lost.

Maybe it would help control that thimble that seems to have taken to its legs and walked away everytime you sit down to start using it again. I have often thought I needed to attatch something to my thimble that woud make noise when I clappped my hands so I could find it again. Several times I have found my thimble in my kitties stash of toys, so evidently she likes it.

Thanks for educating me on something today. But I must say if I paid the $240.00 for the gold cage, I would be afraid of losing the cage!.... I don't think I have any thimbles that are that are worth that much. Neat idea, but like I said I'd be afraid of losing the cage not my thimble. Thanks for sharing though, I had never seen or heard of these before, they are very cute and sounds handy. I rarely use a thimble, so don't think it would be a wise investment for me.

Georgia Bonesteel had a segment on one of her shows with a woman who makes silver thimbles using the lost wax casting method. I have actually used one, and I thought it was too heavy to be comfortable. I would have to have a thimble cage for that if I ever purchased one.

One of the guilds that I belong to has a "Silver Thimble" award each year, and I could see purchasing a cage for it if I ever won it (chances are slim to none that this would happen)
