What is the thin little border next to a big border called?

OK...I know you are thinking I am off my rocker...well I am thinking it too!! ha ha

I can not think of a name for this process....putting a thin (approx.) 1/4" folded fabric next to a border in a quilt. It isn't sewn down...you attach it to the border then sew the border and this ( )piece to the quilt. it is like a flap.

OK can you help my tired brain?

Is it a flange?

Treasureit 09-22-2013 05:15 PM

YES!!!! Thank YOU SO MUCH!!!

valleyquiltermo 09-22-2013 05:16 PM

Piping maybe?? Flange maybe?? :):p

slicksister 09-22-2013 05:25 PM

Yep, flange.

dunster 09-22-2013 05:29 PM

Flange if it's flat, piping if it's stuffed.

Bevsie 09-22-2013 06:26 PM

It's a flange. Also heard it called a crumb catcher and a flipper flopper......we like to name things silly in Minnesota!

And, what is the purpose of this the flange? I am not familiar with the term but, then I haven't been quilting very long either.

It is just a different little extra in the border of a quilt. Some folks like them, some don't.

Usually a flange as it flaps. But you can place a very narrow border in a quilt either in the binding ie flange flap or between sections.
I put flanges by my borders but find it easier to cut 1" strip fold. In half and put around edge and then bind in normal way. I find I am not capable of stitching exactly on the right place and machine line, flange anD binding always looks a mess. The way I do it no problem. I have wondered if you could cheat with a narrow border by using sticky celtic knot binding and sewing that where ever you want.

I call it a mock piping and will cut 3/4-1" wide usually. I love how it can add that needed color before the final border or binding, but not have to add a separate border.

For some strange reason, that made me laugh!

And that made me laugh!!! But I get it and would have to agree with the same likeness in our case.

This is definitely the smile of the day posting. Thanks so much for the analogy!

What is it called when you put a trim between two border pieces that is a folded piece of material about 1" wide?

The small green strip on the far left is a folded material that only has the raw edge sewn down.

It adds a bit of "class" to the project. Sort of like a mat when framing a picture or painting.

maviskw 09-24-2013 06:13 AM

Betty Cotton calls hers a "sidewalk". But she has highways, freeways, one way streets and intersections in her quilts.

MacThayer 09-24-2013 06:43 AM

"Flange". I like that. Sounds more sophisticated than my name for it, which is "that little border." LOL!

I would think that would be a flange.

ShirlR 09-24-2013 05:42 PM

Thanks, Treasureit, for asking that question! I was coming from the opposite direction - I read the term "flange" recently and wondered what a "flange" was. When our members gave the term, you had described it perfectly, LOL!
