What should I consider when choosing a thread color? The background color? Colors in the quilt?

I am in the process of piecing a quilt, (not together yet), each block is a different fabric. Every other block is a blank and will be quilted with a feather design. The pieced blocks are colorful. The background is a cream/white print. Would a multi colored thread with the same colors/tones look ok?

ARe you looking for thread for piecing? I use light color thread. When piecing, I have just been using the spools i have that have smaller amounts of thread to use it up.

When quilting, a natural color/off white has been sufficient.

No, I'm thinking ahead to the quilting. I have a couple of spools of the multi colored thread and was considering using it because the colors match the colors in the blocks.

one question to answer is whether you want the quilting to stand out or to disappear - contrasting thread will stand out. Multi-color thread will be less obvious and works great on a quilt with many colors in it. a solid color thread will disappear when it's on a piece of the same color but show up well when on fabrics of other colors. This is another one of those personal choice dilemmas that quilters face.

I agree, the choice depends on how much you want the quilting to show up on parts of the quilt or the whole quilt :D:D:D

Use a sample - the square you are quilting and place scraps of the colors around the edge. Do some quilting with thread of choice and see if that gives you a good feeling on your choice.
