I was wondering what thread do everyone use to quilt,
100% cotton, Poly/Cotton blend or Poly? I use a poly/cotton blend. Should i use a cotton thread? Where do you get your cotton thread? online or local stores. |
What type of quilting? Hand or machine? I know NOTHING about machine quilting but I use cotton covered polyester thread for hand quilting normally.

For machine quilting I use either Gutermann 100% cotton, Mettler silk finish cotton, or (my favorite) Star machine quilting and craft 100% Egyptian cotton thread. The Star thread comes on a 1200 yard spool and is made by Coats and Clark. You can find it at Walmart sometimes, some quilt shops, JoAnns or Hancock Fabrics. It is either solid or variegated. You can find out more info about it at http://www.starthreads.com/products.htm Online you can buy it at Keepsake Quilting.
I do not hand quilt-cannot help you there!! |
It is Machine quilting

I use all cotton for quilting and piecing. I also use it for hand quilting. I like to buy my thread from Connecting threads, on line. Its Called essential thread
|
I only hand piece and hand quilt. I use the hand-quilting thread Coats and Clark from Hancocks. I use it for piecing and quilting, because it is heavier and (I think) more durable. Very smooth, seems to be strong.

I use 100% cotton for machine piecing and quilting. When I asked 3 or 4 seasoned quilters about this they all said cotton cotton cotton.
