What Thread To Use
 

Hi everyone..........this newbie has another question. Thread choice is limited in Ontario to maybe Coats & Clark or Gutermann. I can't touch the local quilt shops due to their high costs and did find a 30/3 at Fabricland ( I think that is too heavy) for ONLY $16.00 incl. tax for a 1200 spool. Is 50/3 ok to use for piecing and top quilting. Does it always have to be all cotton.

no dose not have to be all cotton just not rayon a lot of people use coats & clark

Also I imagine www.connectingthreads.com ships to Cananda. Their cotton threqad is very nice and the price is RIGHT! :)

I use Coats and Clark all the time. They have different varieties. I like the all cotton for machine and heavy duty. It just depends on the subject I'm working on.

Coats and Clark is very expensive compared to other quality brands. There is less on the spool for the same price. I live in the US and buy thread from Tristan's. Their cotton mako thread is fantastic. I can't find it in the US.

Does the '3' in 50/3 refer to the ply? I was under the impression Aurifil threads were 2 ply. Can anyone confirm?

Why not rayon? Is sulky thread rayon? I assumed it was ok to quilt with?

The first number is the weight of the thread the second is the ply. For piecing and bobbin I like the 2 ply. Tristan sells cotton mako which is the same as Aurifil which they are clearancing out. Aurifil is just a brand name.

Rayon is more for machine embroidery. Sulky makes different types of thread, not just rayon.

Yes, 50/3 is good to use for piecing. With whatever thread you use do a test and verify that it doesn't throw off your seam allowance. Thicker thread takes up a tiny bit more room & vice versa.

Also there has been a lot of discussion lately about the use of poly thread. Evidently most people feel it's just fine to use in quilting due to improved quality.

Oops- I mis spoke (or is that mis typed??) it's 2 ply not 3 ply!!

I beleive Connecting threads thread is 3 ply.
