What type of quilt and date?

Hi,
I had this quilt left to me and am trying to learn more about it. I would like to know what type of quilt it is and how I can tell the approximate date? I think it is old but I don't know? Anyone have a guess as to this quilt's value? It is on a queen size bed in the picture. Shelly |
It is a YOYO quilt . Age ? I do not know. I do love it. Does it have a piece of fabric for a backing ?Good luck in your quest for knowledge. Hugs

That is a yo-yo quilt. I know my mom was making one in the early fifties, if that tells you anything.

Is there quilt batting in it? It will be dated by the newest fabric in it. It may be easier to see the fabric on the other side.

It does not have a fabric backing...I can put my finger through the holes in between each small square. Is it supposed to have a fabric backing?

It doesn't have to have a bat or backing. Fine the way it is. I bet it weighs a ton! Very nice.
As for date, quilts are dated by the newest fabric in the quilt. Google dating cotton fabric and see what you find. It may take some research. peace |
Yo-you quilt. I concur with the rest of the folks. Date goes by newest fabric. My Mom made one of these in the late 50's-60's.
Good luck! Love the quilt. Anita |

It probably isn't worth a great deal of money - I had an old quilt appraised - it was worth about $300.00 and was from the late 1800's. To me it is priceless as my grandfather helped piece it when he was a little boy - It was a functional quilt that was used a lot - log cabin with shirtings and even eyelet fabric. Seems like the quilts that are worth a lot of money are like Baltimore Albums, etc. Enjoy your quilt - it is a treasure.

If there is a quilt museum or historical society in your area they may be able to help date the quilt. You can check the completed listings on eBay to get a better idea of what they're selling for.

I have a finished yo-yo quilt which was made by my aunt back in the early 1930's out of fabrics of the time. I have an unfinished yo-yo quilt, started by my mom at the same time my aunt started hers. Both have passed away. I have all the fabrics/yo-yo's to finish my mom's, but I can't make myself work on it for now. My mom used my aunt's on a double bed, always over a solid color blanket or sheet. They really aren't designed to be sandwiched (at least, I've never seen one sandwiched). I agree with the others, you'd have to date the fabrics used in yours to know more closely when it was made. A treasure no matter what--they're a tremendous amount of work.
