What type of quilting pattern should I use
 

I will be sending out this completed quilt to a professional for quilting. She does edge to edge quilting. She has a large portfolio of computerized patterns she can use and will be able to size the patterns to make the quilting as dense as I'd like. The quilt constructed from 12 different fat quarters in cool colors. The backing is MODA SNOW. It is the first semi-modern quilt I've constructed with all solid colors. Since the white is so prevalent I thought white thread would work best. I thought I'd have her use a fairly dense pattern that is not so dense it makes it stiff. It is a lap size (65x80). Something with curves since the quilt pattern is so angular? Or an angular quilting pattern because one could say the design of the quilt gives a result that looks curved? Concur? Any other ideas? I welcome them all. Thanks in advance.

I seldom like modern quilts, but I like this one a lot. I would use a light blue or light violet thread rather than white. Maybe you can look through the longarmer's designs and pick one you like.

It looks modern. Is there web sites with modern quilting patterns?

I would use a meander - something totally nondescript, but curvy. I'm not sure I would have it quilted heavily. The only reason for heavy quilting, as I understand it, is if it's going to be washed frequently. With so much white, that might be necessary, depending on how it's used.
I'd try really light violet as the thread color. Your pattern is so striking, I would not use any color that stands out. White might look too stark against the blue. Let the piecing be the star.

I think a white would show up too strongly against the darker colors, and give a jarring affect. I think a very light blue or very light purple would look quite nice. (My goal is to pick a thread color that shows up against all colors, but at about the same level with all.)

For a quilting design, I think a design highlighting squares might work well, like this one:

(I know the usual advice is to use curving quilting when your piecing is angular visa versa, but I just feel like this might be a good exception.)

Looking at your piecing, I see a few pinwheels there, so another idea is to pick a quilting echoes that a bit. I didn't a quick search and found a few images, below. I don't love them, but maybe they will trigger an idea.

Since your quilter has so many different patterns be sure to have her show you the various patterns that will fit your mind set. She should be able to give you a good Idea of what will work with your size quilt on her computer screen and scale it for density. I have just recently done this with my quilter. The computer showed me that I did not want it as dense as I thought with the pattern I chose. I then went on to a similar pattern and it worked much better with my idea of a semi modern design.

I really like the motif with the squares. It is interesting about the pinwheels. I don't see them at all unless I do mental gymnastics. I see the white bar bells, in fact they remind me of martini glasses with an olive in them.

All the comments and suggestions have been really useful, especially the suggestion that I pick a thread color that will blend on both the white and colored piecing.

I really like the idea of a light violet for the thread, I don't see a lot of violet blocks in the design and I think using a light violet thread would bring those up just a little more.

I'm not big on the modern quilts, either, but this one is beautiful. Good job!

It's interesting to me how sometimes one can see the shapes formed by the background of a design and sometimes see the shapes of the foreground parts. When I see the thumbnail version of your quilt, my mind focuses on the shapes formed by the colored pieces, especially how they form angular version of curves on the diagonals. When I look at the larger version of your quilt (by clicking on the thumbnail), I can see the shapes formed by the white much more easily. Now that you mention the martini glass interpretation of them, I can really see them and am quite amused by it!

Like other posters, I am not wild about a lot of modern quilts, but I really like yours. It is charming, interesting and very attractive. Well done!

As Dunster suggested using a pale colored thread instead of white I agree. I started out using only white when I started quilting but have changed over to a pale green, pale silver grey, creme or pale yellow. It doesn't show all that much but yet enough that you can really see the quilting with it. Here's one I use a pale green on and there's no green in this quilt. This was a game changer for me after this quilt.


I did change thread colors on the sash and border though.
