what is the weirdest material you have used in a quilt?
 

I am repairing (AGAIN!) my personal bed quilt and shaking my head at some of the fabric I used. All the Indian print bedspread fabric has been replaced years ago, now the brown lining material is starting to go. The navy polyester will outlast me, I am afraid. What was I thinking?

So what is the strangest thing you have used in a quilt? And how did it work out?

I have only made quilt tops since I am a fairly new quilter so I have not used any unusual materials. When I was visiting my grandmom last week she offered me some of her "quilting" materials. There were polyesters and stretch lace and assorted odd things in there. She said she went to "quilting school" and just never got around to making the quilts. Haha.

Cotton fabric from men's boxers (underwear). When my late father-in-law died, I told my mother-in-law to send me some of his clothes and I would made a comfort quilt for her. I cried when I opened the box she sent me, because she had packed as if he was going on a short trip. 4 pair each of socks and boxers, 2 long-sleeved shirts, 2 short-sleeved shirts, 3 pairs of pants, and a jacket. I used everything except the socks and jacket. I don't know how the quilt has held up, it's only a few months old and I don't think it gets a lot of real heavy use.

The skirt from a bridesmaid dress. I used it in three wall hangings. That stuff was a serious pain to work with.

The worst was gold Lame on my very FIRST quilt - a table runner as a Christmas gift. I thought "hey ... wouldn't gold lame look great as the binding!".

It's really surprising that I continued quilting after that experience.

actually I made several quilts from handwoven material, a collaborative effort between me and the weaver. She made lovely fabric but it was much more loosely woven than normal fabric.

i made a memory quilt and used some stretch terry one-piece pajamas. boy was that hard to keep in place.

Mine was not the outside fabric. I had made a quilt for theNEC quilt show. I read the sizes and it stated the quilt had to be a metre in one direction. Oh no mine was less. I had made a paper pieced Christmas cactus what to do. I made extra shutters on the sides also using paper piecing. This particular year the weather was terrible and living in a small village I could not get out. I found a blanket of my grandma and used that as batting on the shutters. From the outside the only way to tell was by the feel the blanket was heavy on the sides. The stitching etc was no different.

Well, didn't use it - but a gal that I know called me last week and said that she had a huge box of fabric that she did not want, that somebody had given to her and wanted to know if I wanted it. I asked if it was "quilting fabric" and she said that she did not know. She is from Mexico (does not speak English too well) and I suppose they don't have to many quilts there. Anyway, met her in town and she had a HUGE box that my DH put in my back seat. I was so excited and could not wait to get home to go through it. Well, it was drapery fabric, some sheer and some very heavy, also some blackout lining drapery fabric and even a slick shower curtain. Was really disappointed.
