What would you do?

I have asked for advice on this board before and have been very pleased with the response. What would you do to these 12 blocks? They are 12 1/2 x 12 1/2. I don't really care what size this turns out to be. Sashing-what color or colors? Border or borders-what color or colors? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

Pat625 12-11-2012 04:50 PM

I would definitely sash them so you don't lose the individual blocks..I would arrange them from darkest overall to lightest..The sashing I would pick would blend with one of your colors, but not exact, to highlight the different designs---maybe a very light grey??

DogHouseMom 12-11-2012 05:01 PM

Do you have any more of the fabric's used? Those are very pretty blocks and I would be tempted to set them with alternating solid blocks to really showcase them. If you don't have enough fabric for that - but some - I'd sash them with cornerstones of 4 patch.

tesspug 12-11-2012 05:12 PM

IMHO sashing is a must when the blocks are so pretty, it frames them like pictures. Maybe a yellow, then borders in the rose and the dark.

Tartan 12-11-2012 05:15 PM

I love your blocks and that creamy butter fabric. I think I would see how that would look as sashing.

mucky 12-11-2012 05:15 PM

Definitely sash them or separate them somehow. The design is too busy and the blocks are lost.

dunster 12-11-2012 05:19 PM

Definitely sash them, and consider putting them on point. Somehow sampler quilts look much classier when set on point.

Scissor Queen 12-11-2012 05:46 PM

I'd do something a lot more interesting than just rows of blocks with plain sashing. I have a couple of patterns that have sampler type blocks but I don't think you can get the patterns. There is at least one book about how to set swap blocks that is likely to have more interesting things to do with sampler blocks.

patchsamkim 12-11-2012 05:56 PM

Another vote for setting the blocks on point...either with sashing, or alternate blocks. As for color for the sashing...maybe a darker burgandy?

sustraley 12-11-2012 06:19 PM

Thanks for the advice so far.

Blocks on point with a rail fence sashing and nine patch cornerstones, to pick up and repeat what is in the bottom left corner block in the pic. Only I'd have 2 dark fabrics in the rail fence, either the burgundy or black, and a light middle fabric (maybe the butter yellow? It's so pretty!) Very nice blocks! The top will be lovely whatever you choose to do.

earthwalker 12-12-2012 12:45 AM

They are really beautiful....I like the on-point idea, but would be inclined to go with the charcoal and the light stone/grey colour for sashings/borders. Depends how much fabric you have left over, but whatever you decide it will be just fine....you have a great eye for fabric/colour.

sustraley 12-12-2012 03:41 AM

Great ideas!!

susie-susie-susie 12-12-2012 04:42 AM

Sashing definitely. That would make the blocks stand out. They are very pretty and will make a beautiful quilt. I think a light color such as the buttery yellow would make the blocks pop. Show us what you decide.

I am a design wall girl! lay them out and "audition" them. I like the on point idea. Last time I wanted to put a block on point, I hated it that way! (go figure...I usually LOVE them on point). Try out a couple sashings underneath. Even if you do it at the quilt shop. I think sashing is a must with these. You lose the design when they are 'mushed' together. Did you piece them? I like them alot!

HillCountryGal 12-12-2012 07:20 AM

Agree with the others about sashing. I'd use grey and black to make the blocks pop.
Trying out ideas on a design wall will tell you what you need to do.

DebbieJJ 12-13-2012 02:46 AM

I wonder how a black sashing would look........

coopah 12-13-2012 05:17 AM

Those are just excellent blocks!! Since there's already a lot of yellow, I'd probably go to a darker color. The darker burgundy or black sound good. So does auditioning fabrics on a design area. Show us when you're done! Happy sewing! :-)

Geri B 12-13-2012 06:12 AM

I think on point with a thin frame of a tonal something around each one and a tonal plain block between. Altho these blocks are sharp, when put together in something, there needs to be places for your eyes to rest.......also a sash and regular border to frame this piece of art in......whichever way you do it, it will be your creation.....have fun....

Retiree 12-13-2012 06:14 AM

Your blocks are beautiful. Please share pictures of your final top.

maviskw 12-13-2012 06:33 AM

I had a set of blocks like that, made by different people, only they were not all the same size. So I framed all of them with a color that matched that block. Some had two frames, as they already had one frame on when I got them. And some got a tiny frame and then a larger one. You could frame each in 1/4 inch of black or something very dark, and then another frame. After they were all framed and the same size, I put them together with a very light 2 inch sashing. When my granddaughter saw that, the first thing she said was, "Looks like a quilt show." So that is the name of that quilt. "Quilt Show" Each block is showcased. I have another one in process right now.

cowgirlquilter 12-13-2012 06:40 AM

I would try using the very dark color that is present in your blocks and use that as sashing. These blocks and the colors are gorgeous, can't wait to see what you do!

sunnymom 12-13-2012 08:12 AM

Very pretty blocks. Like everyone else, I agree with sashing in a darkish color with a nice border. :)

quiltapillow 12-13-2012 03:12 PM

Great Blocks; I agree on a solid sashing to set them off. Maybe alternate the colors on point if you know how. Please post a picture when you finish them. Very Nice indeed!!

Do you have the name of the book.? I would be interested in checking this book out on setting swap blocks?

katykwilt 12-13-2012 05:46 PM

Two thoughts: each block bordered, then sashing
and
using two colors, make each border with two ajoining sides of each color. Then by changing which two sides touch, you can even change the result and possibly make the transitions from each block smoother.

sewdamncute 12-13-2012 05:49 PM

I would do sashing...audition dark and light to see what you like best. I also like the look of samplers on point. See how a "blank" square of fabric looks with your blocks. Anyway just my opinion, your blocks are really nice!

Halo 12-13-2012 06:03 PM

I, like maviskw. would sash them in black first & then another lighter sashing around that. I think that would really make the blocks pop. They are beautiful blocks & will be a outstanding quilt.

Betty Ruth 12-13-2012 06:36 PM

I would use a light yellow/beige like the background in some of the blocks for the sashing.

ube quilting 12-13-2012 08:16 PM

I would set them on point with sahing in black with grey cornerstones and find a pretty, large floral fabric to alternate with these great blocks and a black border.

Love the blocks!
peace

Mariposa 12-13-2012 08:20 PM

Perhaps set the blocks on point, using a grey for sashing(?), or perhaps do 9-patch sashings with a grey and a darker (or lighter) color in the middle-

DITTO! Exactly what I'd do

These are great blocks. I would love to see them on point with a sashing.

As someone mentioned there are also various methods to set them. I love the book "Setting Solutions" and "Great Sets" by Sharyn Craig. http://www.sharyncraig.com/ Lots of great ideas especially for swap blocks if they are not the same size.

Look forward to see what you do.

sustraley 12-15-2012 03:54 AM

So many great ideas. Thanks everyone.

I too like your blocks - Here is another vote for sashing - When I saw this this morning, I had EQ open. This is what I would do (I included a screen shot of EQ). I would set them onpoint with a grey or black sashing (maybe add soft yellow square to soften the harshness) add the yellow as the setting triangles and put a stripped border around the whole thing. I think they would be striking set that way!! You would need about 2 yards of each color to pull this off and you would not have to have the exact fabric in the blocks. pm me if you have any questions.
