Check the sports store to see what they sell for ladies Penguin fans. Maybe they have 'feminized' the goldenrod color of the uniforms?? I like the other ideas to put lace but maybe find a fabric that looks like lace rather than actual lace. You have taken on quite a challenge! keep us posted.

Christmas sales are on! How about blue (light blue), with snowflakes and also the tonal white on white with snowflakes. You could do a solid backing with (as maryb119) appliqued Penguin or Penguins on the back with 'PINK' scarves and hats ice skating. Just a thought. Good luck.

I like the BQ2 quilts to use with focus fabrics |
I can't believe they would pick material like this for a girl! I have used sports materials but only for my grandsons, 6 of them. Why would anyone pick these??? Maybe it is just me but I don't think there is a whole lot you can do "to make them look girly." Could you suggest something more appropriate to them?

Truth be told ..u have mayor work ahead making this girly in anyway...girly doesn't always mean pink..I think I would try to find some light pastels to match..my very first thought was use white with it...

I've been asked to make a quilt for an expected Granddaughter. The Grandparents gave me this material with the instructions to 'make it girly'. I thought about using pink and black flannel to make a rag quilt...but that's too easy. Any ideas? What pattern would you use?

Grey is a popular baby color right now...you could probably pair the fabrics up with grey and pink. Good luck!
|
First of all, I would thank her for the material, then get down to basics--how about she and you take a trip to the fabric shop and choose a more feminine, although sporty, fabric. Surely you and others could consider a different and appropriate fabric. Good luck - that fabric, which is very nice, is NOT good for a new born little girl! Good luck!

It appears the grandparents are genuine fans so I would nix the color pink and use the white or gold color that is used in the 1st fabric as the background and use the printed fabric to construct whatever block you decide to use. The 2nd fabric that is really busy looking I would use as the backing or make panties with ruffles, burp cloth, or diaper bag. Also, using "large" white or gold rickrack will make the quilt "girlie looking". :) I must admit, I do love the penguin applique suggestion. |
Thanks for the suggestions. The Grandmother has decided on a rag quilt.

I am so shocked by the idea that the fabric isn't girlie simply because it is a sports team, and the nasty/negative way that is stated by some folks in this thread. I love the Pittsburgh Penguins and I would love to have a baby quilt made with it. The things I make for myself related to the team have a lot of the gold and white. Tossing in some grey is a great idea as well. I would use the sport fabric for the backing of the quilt and do a nice "pattern of choice" for the top.

I'm thinking that they gave you an impossible job. Maybe a golden brown teddy bear here and there on the quilt with colorful bows or skirts. If you don't appliqué, maybe you can find a paper pieced teddy bear to make blocks out of. If you add bright colors to those fabrics it might be more appealing. IMHO, those colors are not very inspiring. Love to see the quilt you finally make.

How old is the grand-daughter? Maybe you could ask her whst she would like with this material-
Glad you asked for help- I'm a bit stumped too |
I would totally forget about any pink. If grandma wants a rag quilt then just do that. BUT I would use the light blue gray color and some white to make a pleated ruffle on the edge. White as the sashing. It's pretty busy material so it needs to be tamed. You could also make a fringe border. Just forget the pink. White would make it pop and bring in the "girly factor". Stick with the colors on the selvage edges on the fabrics.

wow, this is a challenge. I like the idea of a blue ruffle around the edge.

I would use a white on white fabric if you want to add a third and I'd edge it with white eyelet in place of binding.

Sorry, don't know how that reply was posted three times!!!
|
Just use these fabrics for the back. lol. Sorry but thats all I got.
|
I would use the first two fabrics as the back, and a something pink and girly on the front, then use the left over first fabrics as backing on some burp cloths, bibs, and maybe a diaper tote? Just my musings of course. Please post what ever you decide?

Since you are making a rag quilt, maybe you could use pink or yellow flannel instead of batting, then the color would be subtle. I think, once you begin, wonderful ideas will come to you and you'll know that you're doing the right thing.
|
How about just sewing them together (in any way you choose: leave both pieces solid. Cut into squares and do a checkerboard. Whatever.) And then sew a wide satin ruffle binding around it. A soft gold or white? My granddaughter had a blanket that she loved with a fat black satin ruffle. That is one treatment I would not do for a boy... Maybe that would make it girly enough. Then make her a beautiful soft pinky rose quilt! My personal fav. I think all baby girls need a blanket with tiny rosebuds!
|
I think I would ask if it was essential to use that fabric. Maybe you could use it as an exchange and find something more "girly" appropriate?
|
I say maybe due a chevron pattern in this quilt with the second fabric as backing and the front as one of the main fabircs I would also suggest maybe looking online for more penguin fabric that is maybe a little more girly to add to it.
|
I'm sure you can find some fabrics with pink, tan, black and white stripes....that would give you the ability to add other solid pink to it. Maybe a patchwork heart block? Here's one I found as a sample (not my photo) https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...acbb2000d5.jpg

YIKES!! I like the suggesitons above, but that fabric is anything buy girlie to me!!
|
You are so right GrannieAnnie! I realized that after I posted this! Pardon my mistake . I think some of the solutions to this " how to make it girly" request are good ideas- not sure what I would do.
|
I would do white rick rack somewhere - the large kind - maybe on the blueish gray sashing???
