What would you do?

My nephew is getting married next year. I told him I would make them a quilt as a wedding gift and asked what color they would like. His response was "Well, scarlet and gray of course. haha" So, would you make a scarlet and gray traditional quilt or more of an OSU design?

Sandy

Well, I could see a quilt in scarlet and multiple shades of grey. It sounds very modern.

I made this one in scarlet and grey for my niece, who graduated from Ohio State. Went with an Ohio Star quilt pattern called "Twin Sisters". Still Ohio-inspired, still scarlet and grey. She likes the fact that it doesn't scream "college", as an OSU design would have done. I've had 3 more requests for the same pattern, same colors!

Ohio Star quilt in scarlet and grey!

starshine 10-18-2015 12:26 PM

Cindi must have been posting at the same time as me :) I was envisioning scarlet star points and grey background

Onebyone 10-18-2015 01:38 PM

Love the star quilts in two colors. I have learned from making wedding quilts for the males in the family not to care about the quilt after it's given and make simple designs for them. Only one has stayed married, the others have divorced and didn't get the quilt. LOL

lynnie 10-18-2015 02:19 PM

I like the idea of an Ohio star. making and OSU quilt...well, he'd outgrow that soon.

Quilting Grandma 10-18-2015 02:31 PM

I love the Ohio Star ... However, I doubt he would ever out grow the Buckeye - OSU.
My son so 50+ and is still an avid ( or is that rabid) U of M fan.

sandyl 10-18-2015 03:16 PM

Cindi, that is really pretty. I really like that.

dunster 10-18-2015 04:43 PM

Cindi - lovely quilt, and so perfect for the OSU fan.

nanac 10-18-2015 04:53 PM

Outgrow OSU!??!??? Not in this lifetime, now matter how oldhe gets, lol. I made a Double Irish Chain in Scarlet and Gray with thin black accents, for my brother, and it was a big hit. He displays it even when it's not football season. When it is football season, he wraps himself up in it on Game Days.

If you are a true Buckeyes fan, you never outgrow it....it is part of you for life!

Gail B 10-18-2015 06:54 PM

Cindi - your quilt is beautiful. Love the grey & red.

BETTY62 10-18-2015 07:55 PM

I would copy Cindi's awesome quilt. It the right colors and a beautiful design.

sandyl 10-19-2015 03:10 AM

Yep, a Buckeye fan here too and you never, never outgrow the scarlet and gray.

feline fanatic 10-19-2015 03:49 AM

Wow Cindi, that quilt is great!

Sophie2 10-19-2015 04:08 AM

Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye no matter your age. Love the twin stars. I have made a few quilts that is in my Avatar that "Buckeyes" have loved.

celwood 10-19-2015 04:38 AM

I would certainly try to put some of OSU fabric in the quilt.

carolynjo 10-19-2015 05:32 AM

I gave my son and DIL a family heirloom quilt, but, I quilted the label into the quilt and put on the label that it was his, in honor of his wedding. When they divorced, there was no question that it was his quilt since only his name was quilted into the back label. This might help keep the quilt in the family, unlike one couple I know, where the female kept all the quilts the groom's grandmother had made from quilt kits printed in the 30's. She refused to give any of them back.

I made a college colored quilt for a fan. It's simply the Disappearing Hourglass pattern. You might like this easy design:

ManiacQuilter2 10-19-2015 05:58 AM

I would ask him again to see if it was a joke or really their color preference. I hope to work on a black, red and gray charity quilt soon.

tessagin 10-19-2015 06:08 AM

Beautiful quilt.

Check to see if these are his favorite colors or his color schemes. I'd make something that was designed for him and then it would be more special. After all, you want them to use it and if it isn't made with colors that he has in his decor, it may end up in a closet.

ghostrider 10-19-2015 07:59 AM

I'm an MSU Spartan mom, SIL, aunt (x2), and ex-wife and even I support the scarlet and gray Ohio Star idea...just don't expect me to support the team! LOL There are some really dramatic Ohio Star quilt patterns that would look great in those colors. Does the bride-to-be have the same academic loyalty?

Skhf 10-19-2015 08:09 AM

The colors are great but I would avoid OSU quilt itself. As a wife I appreciate a little more of a grownup look, not one tied to a college. Screams dorm roo. Or frat house to me.

indymta 10-19-2015 10:46 AM

Love Cindi's quilt and think it doesn't scream college quilt. I think only OSU people would get that it
has the school colors. Even if the bride isn't from OSU the quilt is beautiful on its own. Also, because of the red
one could think Valentine's day, 4th of July, Christmas...doesn't have to be put away after football, basketball
season.

zozee 10-19-2015 10:52 AM

I wouldn't make an OSU quilt as a wedding gift unless they both asked for it.

I second that!

Yep, scarlet and grey are great colors together!

rusty quilter 10-19-2015 04:27 PM

Having sons I have learned what colors "they like" isn't necessarily the choice of their wives! I would ask the bride what colors she likes and go from there...Maybe my guys are different...but in general they don't do the decorating!

What a great job! It's beautiful. We have some REAL fans of OSU here.

sewingsuz 10-19-2015 05:46 PM

I love the Ohio Star pattern, I am from OHIO.

I'm sure this is what happens most of the time! I just remembered that we made a quilt for my brother and his wife who have just divorced! I bet he doesn't have the quilt that we made for him either! Why is this the case? Whichever family made the quilt is the person who should keep the quilt! I'm sure this doesn't happen 90% of the time.

I might have agreed with this before living in the center of Buckeye Nation, however I have seen women farther from 21 than closer to this age that are just as shall we say enthusiastic about all things OSU, and some even more so than their mates. I like that with the red it would fit in with so many other times of the year, but buckeye nuts know no season that it wouldn't fit in. just sayin'

I agree that is might be a good idea to at least talk with the bride but if she went to OSU she might even request logo material. There is something in the water I suspect.
A good point about making the label a dedication to your nephew in honor of his wedding though.

And ghostrider I totally understand your pov, as well as all the M residents too. :)

quilting cat 10-19-2015 09:15 PM

I vote for the scarlet and multiple shades of gray. You could still do Ohio Star.

Thanks for that, starshine. It's the old rule of "if you're knocked out of the running, cheer for the conference." :D

I think you have to be a part of Buckeye nation to understand that one never outgrows the loyalty....and if you marry a Buckeye, you are a fan, like it or not! Lol!
Here are 2 Buckeye quilts I made for my adult sons- the first so a pattern that was a Mystery quilt from this board, and the second is a free pattern from Bonnie at Quiltville...3rd will be in the works after the holidays-probably a log cabin because I have lots of leftover strips. Go Bucks!
