I usually do rows but may try blocks next time. It may be easier to manage especially with a large quilt. Happy quilting.

I find putting small blocks together into larger blocks helps me keep everything squared up a lot easier. My long seams always seem to go wonky somewhere along the line.

My personal preference is the 5 x 5 chunks -- I get less waviness than with rows.

I usually do rows but find that they stay square if I am careful about the direction I sew in.

I sew rows 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, etc so that every seam begins on the left side and ends on the right.

Now I sew these double rows together so that I start on the right side and end on the left.

But once you get more than half that quilt together you're dragging that much quilt thru the machine every time. When you sew into sections you can sew just 1 full width seam.

I've done both ways. As long as all your blocks are the same size it should
be ok. I usually take pics of my final design (just in case) and put little
stickers (I use blue painters tape) on every block. Mark A1 to A10 for 1st
row, then B1 to B10 for second row, etc. I put all my labels horizontally so I
will know in which direction they go. It's easy to twist things around when
you are at the sewing machine. Then I go to town. :-D

I like to the quilt in 1/4ths.You nly have one long seam. Works for me.

Which ever way works best for you. You could do rows or 4 patches and then keep working into bigger units.
I would probably use rows as it would be easy to stach each row and then sew them. I would lay the rows back in order then sew row one to row 2 etc. but whatever works for you.

For me it's personal preference. First I would try rows layout first and then blocks. If that doesn't please you then I'd try you might try random placement.
