I have been asked to do a baby blanket. Going to do a regular 9 patch (3 rows of 3 blocks) using boy type fabrics. The baby is due in May and will be a boy.
What would you use - sailboats, sports, etc.? I need ideas please
Thank you

I'm doing one using airplanes.

I always do soft fluffy looking type animals for babies.

Sock monkey blankets are all the rage now. When I deliver Project Linus blankets to our clients, those are the first to be chosen by the children.

How are they going to decorate the babies room? Take that into consideration when deciding on what pattern. Baby animals are always a big hit as well as cars, ect.

I'll be reading this thread for ideas as well. My brother's wife is having another baby, and the room is bumble bee themed. I just can't bring myself to make a quilt that will cover a little baby with bees. I think I found a cute frog fabric that I might use. His quilt from me will not be according to the room theme.

I've done room theme baby quilts but they outgrow them so quickly. Lately I've done them with brightly colored shapes and letters/numbers for baby to lay on when they start to be on the floor. It's a lot of work. I would ask the mom to be what she would like.

I don't know, the mother has no idea that this is going to be made for her, this will be a surprise for her.

I did find some cute "truck" fabric that I like, thought it would be a good one for the 9 patch theme I am doing with this project.

I usually try to make more of a toddler type of theme. They outgrow baby so quickly. I am making 2 for twin boys to be born in April. They will both be of the same pattern but differnt animal prints. They are juvenile looking animals in bright colors but not primary colors. Will post when done. I have made "I Spy" quilts for baby gifts also. I usually make them a bit larger so they can use those longer too.

is there a special sock monkey fabric?

Animal prints or ABC prints are always nice. I made a quilt with cowboy boots all over it for a baby shower a few years ago (the mother loves horses). I also made a Noah's Arc quilt for a little boy. I agree, a toddler quilt will get more use than a real baby pattern.

there are so many ways to go with that it would be a hard decision

Yes, and Lisa's Stitching Post has the best prices that I have found.

I did aliens and space ships for my son's quilt. I tend to lean away from the fluffy animal and pastel baby baby stuff, it's not something that can really grow with the child and I make "baby" quilts/blankets big enough to last until they're like 10. LOL My 5yo still uses the blanket I crocheted for her when I was pregnant (long before I started quilting).

What about dino's? Sock monkeys are super cute, too.

Go with bright fabrics and some black and white. Make it for the baby to study the colors, motifs, etc. Don't make it to match the room! Make it to be used by baby!! :)

Consider what you know about the parent's likes and dislikes when coming up with ideas. See what type of clothing and other items have been purchased. Everyone is different. For example, cars and trucks were mentioned here, and are popular for boys, but we would never have used one with cars and trucks on it for our son, so no theme is "safe." Think about what you know of the parents, and go with your gut!

DebsShelties 02-13-2011 10:44 AM

Here is what I am doing fabric wise - monster trucks and a blender light color for front, on back space ships

Pinkiris 02-13-2011 05:16 PM

Trucks and trains are the first things that come to mind. Dads approve--not too girly!!

Little boys like cars, trucks, fireman, animals, primary colors. I think little children like prints alot.

Cybrarian 02-13-2011 05:31 PM

As an educator, mom and Mimi- a 9 patch is a great I spy or match the blocks quilt. Believe me something that will grow with baby to toddler will be much appreciated by the parents and loved by child. Many juvenile themed fabrics have many different things that can be fussy cut. Definitely include letters & numbers, colors, animals- wild, farm, adult & baby, etc possibilities are many!

Izaquilter 02-13-2011 05:32 PM

i try to do whatever interests the family has or what ever the colors are for the room
