What is your definition of a "scrap" of fabric?

Gosh, good question.

For me, a scrap is anything that is left over from another project, and I don't foresee using it in another project. Often that's 1/2 yard or less, but sometimes is larger cuts. I have a 3 yard scrap right now, because I bought it for a project, but changed my mind, and I doubt I will use it in something else, so I am willing to cut it up for scrap projects. Otherwise, my heirs will be giving it away when I die, because it won't get used.

Less than fat quarter, but at least 3/4".

I have a basket full of schnibbles, 1/2" or less. NOt sure if anyone here uses anything that small, else I will use as filling for something.

Wonder if I can matt it into felting? You know where they wash wool until it matts into a felt type layer, I have seen other fibers used with the wool.

Great question!! I just bought a new "scrap" plastic tub yesterday. I plan to keep anything over an inch that way using two 1/4" seems I'll have 1/2" left. There are a ton of quilts that need pieces that small. I also really like the projects people on here have done using leftover selvege pieces. Then just use my own judgement on how big to go. I think I'll get a larger tub for the bigger pieces just so I can keep them seperate. My daughter has used all empty tubs around her to store her stuff while she's on deployment so naturally Mom has to go buy more. Our daughter joining the Navy has cost us a fortune! ;-)

Schnibbles!! I love it!! my wastebasket is usually full of schnibbles.

I heard about felting also, DH wanted to use the blender and water to mix them all up. I vetoed that idea pretty quick.

You can use small pieces, under 1" for fabric postcards.

Uh-oh. I guess my definition is the pictures I have posted on my scrap post. LOL. Seriously though, I send people 1-3" on request and larger. Scraps is anything left over from a project, what I gather up from the quilt retreats (the waste) and fabric I have no idea why I bought in the first place. This is a fun post.

if i cut a fabric for a project what ever does not go into the project is a scrap from that project. if it is larger than a fat quarter it is folded and put away. if it is smaller than a fat quarter it depends on it...strips go with strips, little squares, triangles in one basket, odd ball usable pieces go in the applique tote. skinny strips go in the rug hooking basket.

To me a scrap is a piece of fabric smaller than a fat quarter. If you can buy 1/4 yd or a fat quarter then it should not be a scrap...just my opinion...

Listening to you talk, I think I need another storage system for my "scraps" (for me anything less than a FQ - I like scrappy quilts so I can put to use just about anything). Right now I just toss them all together, but it would probably be beneficial to have some sense of order to it all... I have those open, stacking baskets next to my sewing cabinet/area that I just toss cut pieces into, then I rummage if/when I need something for another project. Not too efficient I guess...

Deb...love the cartoon...I made a Renfaire costume out of the tapestry upholstry fabric that is on one of the side chairs in my livingroom...guess I shouldn't sit in that chair with my tapestry dress on!

Well sadly she's taken the tubs to store all her things but now all the full tubs are being stored by us. I can see my tubs but can't use them. :lol:

I can also relate to that. (The kid's stuff being stored at Mom and Dad's)

I have done this and we had a lot of fun with the fluff that is made. However, I went to the Good Will for a blender just to use for crafting LOL

Scraps for me are anything smaller than a fat 1/4 or left overs from other quilts. I cut anything smaller than a fat 1/4 into 6 1/2 squares, 5" square and 2ish" strips. Anything else meets the trash can.

I would be happy to have your scraps. To me, a scrap is 2.5 inches wide to 4 inches wide, just big enough to put in a block somewhere. Anything bigger goes into the stash to be used at any moment!
