What is your favorite Craftsy Class?
Which one would you recommend?
MA |
The first one I took was Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine with Ann Petersen and I was hooked! I think it depends on where you're at in your quilting life, what is going to appeal to you. I've got about 15 classes accumulated now and I think she is one of the best instructors. JMHO :)
|
I just checked, I have signed up for 38 Craftsy quilting classes. That includes several free classes such as BOMs. With each class I take, I think that class is the best. When I started quilting 3 years ago, I really knew nothing about quilting. I signed up for Jenny Doan's Quilting Quickly which was the only quilting class they offered back then. As soon as they offered her Quilting Quickly II, I signed up for it. As a beginner, I kept going back to those classes over and over again. I love the Craftsy classes and have learned from each that I have taken. I especially enjoyed the free Block of the Month classes as I made blocks I would never have attempted otherwise. Oh, I only sign up for classes when I can get them at a very reduced rate. There are a couple of classes that I really want to take; but I keep waiting for a lower price.
|
Well I have about 12 and it's hard to say which is my favorite- there are several very talented teachers- Carol Doak, Peggy Martin, Kimberly Einmo, Jenny Doan, Ann Peterson, Laura Nownes, Angela Walters-- so much talent there! Many others too, I think you have to focus on what you desire to learn.
|
I think that you have to go with your current interests or priorities. Think about what you want to do the most and start there. I've been collecting free paper piecing patterns, on Craftsy, because that it my playground while I finish some bigger projects.
Are you a beginner? Looking how to finish things? Trying something new? |
I hated the class by Wendy butler burns. Complete waste of money. She talks to you like you are a two year old and I learned next to nothing in her class. I hate to be negative, but ugh... I was mad after I watched the entire thing.
that said, I love love love the Angela Walters classes and bought all of them. Those are my favorite. I have a few others I am working through too that are pretty good. |
I have several classes and like others have said it really depends on what you want to learn right now. I bought the hand quilting class one day because I swear I was going to learn how to do that. I have watched a few of the videos but have become side tracked with other quilting things but great thing about Craftsy it will be there when I am ready. I have a bought a few of the knitting and crochet ones and I love my long arm classes. I am thinking I want the embroidery machine class for Christmas. I think their Photography classes are way over priced but I think the instructor has some say in that as well. I wish Craftsy would have been around for all my phases of my hobbies.
Hopetoquilt, I hope you got your money back on the class you didn't like. Happy Quilting Tammy |
I have lots of Craftsy classes. Quilting, sewing, knitting and I just added machine embroidery to my interests. Right now my interest is learning how to use my Brother HE1 embroidery machine. After Christmas I may focus on crazy quilting. The classes better stay available, that is one reason I bought them. I have money invested in learning skills.

I've taken several craftsy classes. I enrolled for one, from and instructor I had before. Loved her first class. The second one, not so much. I requested a refund. There was no hassle at all. I really like how you can take the classes over and over (sometimes I'm a slow learner!)

I had a Craftsy class that I didn't like. It was an embroidery class using a embroidery size I can't use. This wasn't explained in the description. Also, the teacher was very sloppy with her work. I emailed Craftsy and they immediately offered me a choice of a refund or any other class. |

I am on a very tight budget and have taken only 2. The first was Fast and Flexible Log Cabins---very very good.
My favorite was Re-piecing The Past-Civil War Blocks by Kaye England. I used red white and blue fabric. This was an excellent class if you want your piecing skills to improve. The blocks get progressively harder. She shows a couple of different ways to make them. I did not put it together they way she showed and just made it a sampler type quilt. |
I have several Craftsy classes as well. I have enjoyed every one of them. One of the Angela Walters classes was too short in my opinion. I notified Craftsy and they made things right. I loved the class, but i thought it was short on content. I have one of the Wendy Burns classes and I liked it. This is a wonderful way to learn.
|
I've bought a lot of them too and I've like them all. I always wait until they're on sale for around 50 percent off. Like many others have said, take the classes that teach what you are interested in. When you click on the class you like, you can view a short video so that you can hear the instructor's voice and a little about her/his style. You can also click on each lesson within the class to see what it covers. So always research the class as much as you can to insure it will address what you think it will.
|
I bought about 20 or so classes. I haven't watched all of them though. I have three quilting friends that come over once a month and we watch/do a class together.
|
My guild has used Crafty classes for workshops. Everyone signs up online and buys the class. It's cheaper then a regular workshop class when the instructor come to our guild which is usually $45- $65 per person. We can have a workshop whenever we want without having to pay travel expenses, meals, and fees for an instructor.
|
I have taken lots of Craftsy classes, too. It's hard to pick a favorite because they are all so different! I loved the two from Jenny Doan. I also liked Wendy Butler Berns class.... guess we all have different opinions, but that's what makes the world interesting. :) As others have said, it's really no risk to take a Craftsy class, because the people there are wonderful to deal with. They will happily change your enrollment to a different class if you find a particular teacher is not to your liking.
|
My favorites are Wendy Butler Berns and Ann Peterson. I got my money back on the one by Weeks Ringle. It was not what I thought it was going to be about.

The one class I bought was a Wendy Butler Burns class. I have yet to watch it to completion. If I have insomnia I turn it on and I'm falling asleep within minutes. My problem isn't the content or her quilting style it is her voice - I find it very monotone.

since I do not know a lot about sewing this one was great..40 Techniques Every Sewer Should Know. I also really liked the serger classes since I knew nothing at all they were really good. - all of the serger classes and the sewing class was worth it. A few were just ok, but I only asked for my money back on one,..even if I just learn one thing I figured it was worth it. Oh and I watched the free longarm class...so glad I did not pay for that one. I skipped though it...her stitches were not impressive.

My favorites were Stupendous Stitching, Hand Stitched collage quilts, and painted quilt. The dye class was kind of useless, I got most of that from a quick google search. I wish I had asked for my money back on the log cabin art quilt class. It was just about how to make a log cabin block nothing about art quilting. There is a time limit on the guarantee |
I have taken many of the Craftsy classes but I would say that Leah Day's classes on FMQ are the ones where I learned the most. I took a couple of classes which I though were sort of a waste of time but there again it depends on your level of quilting and what you want to learn. Block of the month was very well done but quite simple. I signed up for the quilting Big Projects on Small machine but have not gotten around to taking it so can't comment on that one. I have to agree that I was not that impressed with Wendy Burns although I did learn some things so I guess you can always learn one thing new if you listen long enough.

I am taking Peggy Martin [h=1]Quick-Strip Paper Piecing[/h]and I love it!!! and will be trying this soon.
|
I took Amy Gibson's free Block of the Month class and learned a whole lot. She showed many techniques I didn't know and want to learn further.
|
I haven't seen anyone mention Cindy Needham's Craftsy class, I bought that one and just LOVED it!
|
I too had some issues with one of the Wendy Butler Burns classes. Ok information but talked to much. I don't remember which it was. The other one was pretty good. I also loved Cindy Needham's classes as well as Angela Walters and Ann Peterson. I also liked Peggy Martin's quick strip paper piecing. I have learned something from almost every class, and I've done most of the quilting classes.
|
Thanks!! I just checkout design it quilt it by Cindy Needham. The reviews look great so bought that one.
|
Have never paid for a class. There are so many free instructions. Now after years of quilting I can put togather blocks with only written instructions and many with no instructions.
Like Eleanor Burns the best and no cost instructions on her website Quilt In A Day. So glad QNN was free when I started quilting, learned a lot with all the free videos. Also some teachers use methods that are more complicated than others so simplify them to easier ways. |
I love crafty ! My favorite classes are ann peterson free motion quilting on a standard regular machine and leah day. I learned so much from these two ladies, I have gained so much confidence in my free motion quilting stiches!
|
So far I have signed up for about 12 classes. My favorites are Leah Day's classes. She is so talented and personable. I always sign up for any free classes and have watched only a couple. Some don't hold my interest because they show a technique that I am not interested in. I usually watch and see if there is something that would apply to my quilt making. I think this teaching tool is wonderful and I especially like the fact that you can watch over and over.

Also have found Mimi Dietrich "Finishing School Edges & Bindings" good and Carol Doak's Mastering PP - I'm an experienced quilter but learned several excellent tips from these two ladies which make things easier....so worth having them. And best of all, by being on their mailing list, have only paid about half price for all of them when they have specials. |
I have signed up for a bunch of classes and gotten something out of each one. The ones I liked the least were Wendy Butler Burns - that woman is too sloppy and too verbose. It's all about "look at me - look at what I'm doing" ANNOYING! The other one I did not like was Dot-to-Dot with Angela Walters - waaaaay too sloppy for me. Her "close enough" attitude really didn't sit well with me. I was glad I got those classes at 50% off or I would have demanded my money back. There was also an applique class that made me want to slit my wrists. Interesting method but who has time and patience for all those steps. I'll have to go to the craftsy site and see which one that was.
LOVE Ann Peterson, Cindy Needham, Carole Doak. Mimi Dietrich and Peggy Martin. |
