In the class I took I learned how to do a 4patch and flying geese. Since then I've done a 9 patch and a shaded 4 patch. I'm working on a broken dishes lap quilt for my 12yo and its not too bad but I hate her colors! So I'm just wondering what other blocks are easy that you like. I think the more praxtice I get on easier blocks the easier the harder ones will be! I love older looking quilts too.....not contempory.

Have you worked with half square triangles yet? I have a book that my sister gave me with many blocks. Some, I feel, could be done by a beginner. Also you may want to check out Quilterscache. She has a listing in her site that shows which blocks are easier than others by putting 1,2,or 3 pins next to the name of the block.

I have recently become very partial to the pin wheel. they are easy to make as well.
I bought the Wonder cut ruler and find the hst very easy to do...I will applique half the blocks and fill in with the half square triangles.which I make into pinwheels.....makes pretty childs quilt...
Have to say that the disappearing nine patch is super easy.
I LOVE the Disappearing 9 Patch, it is simple, can be used with just two fabrics or 9 whatever you want to make it totally scrappy, with numerous ways of arranging it :D
My all time favorite is the log cabin. It was the first quilt block that I had made.
Ahhhhhh good question..... Lets see I love the 4 & 9 patches, HST, and my wonky blocks. Anything scrappy and I'm in
i'd love to find more EASY patterns for hst blocks |
Churn Dash is easy. Here is the link to Quilters Cache. All kinds of free block patterns.
http://quilterscache.com/C/ChurnDashBlock.html http://quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html The first link is to Churn Dash and second link is to Quilt Blocks Galore. Have fun looking. |
I've done the shoofly but not the churn dash yet :D

One of our board members ShellyQ did a series of block tutorials for beginners...they are wonderful for learning new blocks and also for doing variations. these are in the Tutorial Section

Having made only three blocks so far, a Nine Patch, a Log Cabin and struggling with Fair and Square, I'd say the Log Cabin was by far the easiest even though it has the most pieces.
ok I have done half square triangles. I still need to learn a LOT of quilting terms. Log cabins look hard...glad to hear they're easy! I may have to give them a try soon.
for quick and easy i like pin wheel or flying geese especially for a baby quilt
I am in love with pinwheels right now! and they are so easy.... draw one line sew two and cut once!
Now if I would just get around to dying the fabric to make 2704 2 inch HST which will turn into 676 3 inch pinwheel blocks we would be in business! lol |
I think shoofly is about as easy as you can get, think that will be my next one! I m working on a dnp lap quilt now! Would love to finish this long weekend, we will see, lot going on! Your basic 5" block is easy with alternating colors, easy to do strips.

I love Ohio Star
I have to vote for the friendship star--very forgiving..
I like all of the ones mentioned already, especially Friendship Star. But if you want the easiest of all, except of course the plain square, nothing beats the Stretched Star. It also makes for a beautiful quilt. You just cut a square in a plain fabric, and stitch a little triangle at two opposing corners. When you've done this to as many blocks as you need, sew them all together, arranging them so that the bright corners touch each other, and Bingo! you've got a lovely quilt top. You can use whatever scraps you have around for the corners and get a nice scrappy look.
At first the little corners look like small butterflys, but eventually you can see the stars forming. It's a fun, quick quilt. |
I've been doing Mr. Roosevelt's neck tie for the fall block swap and EVEN I am not messing them up too badly.
Love the HST and (since I've become a QBer) the D9P.
Easy well uhhhh I only have square rulers soo not sure what a wonder ruler is . I try to do squares that are different but I dont always do them well.
I like the friendship star too!
Is there a pattern for the Stretched Star? Sounds interesting. Do you hou have a picture?
I make scrape quilts. My favorite easy block is the 9-patch and log cabin. I found that the sugar bowl or pinwheel was a little harder because I had to make the points meet in the middle. My first quilt was a shoo fly and again I must have been over ironing the triangles because they would stretch a bit and I'd have trouble getting the seams to match. But then I was learning to sew a straight line too.
I found books by Maggie Malone in the library useful. She's written a bunch on Classic American Patchworlk quilt patterns. I'm trying the necktie or bowtie pattern and I like one called Arkansas Traveler or Beggar Block. It can be made to look like butterflies. Both are rated easy. |

Hello, What is a wonder cut ruler? What blocks do you use to make with it? Where do you find one? Thanks...
I'm with Grace, I think the Log Cabin is my favorite too and I've made several, sold 2 and gave one as a gift. I'm now gathering material for another Log Cabin but this one will be Log Cabin Star. This pattern is in Quilter's Cache site.

my first block was the log cabin. Card tricks, honey bee.. That was the easiest for me.
I get obsessed with the corners matching. So, any stresses me.. The engineer in me.. geometry geometry.. obsession ! I do not, not ever criticize about the corners matching. not a policeman. Just a neurotic thing about myself. I wish I could do the curves as easily as others. That is my hang up. |
I absolutely love Snowball alternated with other easy blocks. Snowball and Nine Patch and Snowball and Ohio Star are lovely combinations that are not complex but give a nice movement to a quilt. Playing with matching/contrasting colors in the corners of the blocks leads to different looks.

Thank you Amma for the sites, I hadn't seen these tutorials. They are great Shelly Q.. quilter1234
