zactanls - Would like to know more about the perfect binding miter tool. Thanks
|
Well I would say the June Taylor shape cutter is by far my favorite, as for stupid buys, well lets see, do I have enough room to list them all. I love buying, and I love making things I already have work too. I quit the buying but I have a lot of things lets see if I can name a few, flying geese rulers, have had them for yrs and never used them yet, One of those cutters where you put your fabric in and use this blade that runs on a rail. I don't know what it is called, but it is absolutely helpless, I even have one for cutting paper and it is worthless too. Its the markings that tell you what the cut is. They are hard to get it right. Gee this is a fun subject.

I LOVE your sewing table/bench.. HOW did you have multiple cut outs for each machine? I have three different machines each different sizes, and would love to make a similar table. Thanks.

I definitly agree about this board! And unfortunately I bought that stupid basteing gun too. I am on a limited budget and I could have kicked myself. No more listening to the quilt shop people until I have checked things out on this board!

Favorite tool(s):
Rotary cutter, 24 x 36 cutting mat, 24 x 6 ruler, this board, my imagination. Least favorite: seam ripper - hate to have to use it so often! |
I love my binding tool. Check out the tutorial.

Rotary cutters and mats. They sure beat cutting quilts with scissors.
|
Mine is my Accuquilt Go cutter, love it.
|
A fresh new rotary blade

My fovorite is the puple thangy, a plastic pointer type tool that helps guide the fabric, grab the thread, etc. Worst buy, a basting gun. What was I thinking?!

My fav thing is the ripper holder. When I chain piece this makes cutting them apart so quickand easy. I have one that is from Fons and Porter that I keep in my sewing case for when I take my machine to class or to work at my Bee. At home I have an old inkpen holder that is weighted and the holder part is just the right size to hold a regular ripper. My friend just sticks her ripper int the hole of a larger thread spool and uses it that way.. But I like the weighed holder better.

My rotary cutter, extra large cutting mat, my 2 1/2" x 36 1/2" ruler and my flower pins. Oh and my small sissors and tweezers too!
|
A really good seam ripper - I find that the Bernina ones stay sharp longer and well worth the $6.95. I keep one at each sewing machine.

My best tool is the 1/4inch sewing machine attachment. Now I have a stitch in the ditch one too. Haven't used it yet. But, will soon. Have tried not to buy something I don't need. I try and make do with other things around the house if I can. Hubby makes all my templets so that is a help. OH! and the seam ripper seems like some days I never put it down.
|
favorite tool.......
My imagination.........works like a champ |
I don't know if you would call it a tool, but I splurged on a custom lucite extension table for my Bernina - I'm in heaven when I use it. I have the area underneath for my things (scissors, pins, etc.) But then there is also the adjustable height table for my Bernina, and my drawer unit under the table, and ........

My HERA tool for marking fabric.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex2Pa...layer_embedded Love this board! And, having read all the comments I'm pretty happy I didn't buy one of the basting guns, although my first quilting book recommended them (perhaps others bought the same book and got suckered in). |
Myfavorite tool is my seam ripper. It is mosst used item in my sewing room

Wow, love your table. Could you answer some questions for me? I am trying to figure out how this would work with my new Bernina 830. Am I correct that you cut out a rectangle and that each machine has it's own rectangle that the particular machine will fit into? I am trying to figure out in your set up whether I would be able to use something like this with the 830 because the bobbin area has a door that opens and the bobbin case rolls out. I am wondering whether I would have to cut the rectangle clear through the front instead of a rectangle back some. What do you use for the replacement rectangle boards? Thank you for any help you can give me.

But that was before the updated video. Really works great. The basting gun, just leaves too big of a hole. It works great, it was just hard to get rid of the holes it leaves, and I have the one made for quilting. It is the Micro. |
OK, because of all the positive opinions, I bought the June Taylor 12x18 ruler off Ebay. Is it easy to cut within the grooves? Or does it take some getting use to?
|
I just started quilting. My favorite tool is the support I get from my Hubby and the new Bernina 230 PE he helped me purchase! I am having fun with the car that takes me to the many different quilt shops, where I meet the most amazing women! Oh! and the rotary cutter, matt's and rulers are great as well!
|
Borntoquilt, I too have a hoop on a floor stand and I hand quilt. could you explain how you use the darning needle to mark the quilt? I have not heard of this before.
|
I love my Bias Square ruler. One of the best tools for accurate cutting of blocks up to 6". They do come smaller and larger. I also love my 1/4 inch foot. Oh yes, have to have the needle threader to thread my quilting needles. Just push the lever and it's threaded.

I have just discovered my new favorite tool and it is called Steady Betty. It cost me about $48. I am not too sure about the price. I can't remember numbers very well. I bought the 17 inches square. It really gets the wrinkles out when I iron my fabric on it. My iron and the ironing board are old and even survived a chord chew by a puppy. The iron has very poor steam. With the Steady Betty what you lay it on or what you lay on it will not move. It is worth the money.
My most useful adaption was buying a Singer design square metal case with a handle on top. I filled it with all my safety pins I use for sandwiching my quilts. The weight helps to keep my pinning area wrinkle free. The most wasted buy was the pounce. It was highly recommened like the basting gun I am sure. I could never make it work right no matter what I tried. Including hints offered on this board. I finally threw it away but I kept the chalk. I find I have less mess if I just use a small paint brush. |
My favorite tool is the June Taylor Shape Cut ruler. I have the 12 inch and Joann's never seems to have the 18 inch in stock when I have a coupon. I noticed that Walmart has a couple of different sizes.
Worst purchase was the pounce marker and chalk. Very messy and doesn't stay on the quilt long enough to get a square done. Soon I hope to get the large Martelli cutting board, non slip ruler and rotary cutter. Diane |
my credit card!

I too would like to know how you use the darning needle to mark your quilts.
|
I hear that!!!!!

I guess my favorite tool would be my brain. If it was not for that I would not be able to create some of the things I do. Although some days I can not even find that tool. Has any one seen it today? lol

|
i would like to add to my least favorite this week only lol..
I hate my rotary cutter this week lol.. |
My favorite tools are the rotary cutter, cutting mats, and the acrylic rulers; 18" . I could not get along without my seam ripper, 1/4" quilting foot and my 6600 Janome.
|
I agree on the mats and rulers, but, I love the computer too. So many patterns and designs I would never have or see without it. And it runs my quilt cad program for patterns to print for the Little Gracie frame stylis. And prints out the pp designs.
Close Seconds?? Books and patterns and the quilt board. |
