What Is Your Favorite Size Quilt To Make From Start To Finish?

I make lap quilts, my quilts measure 65" to 70" in width to as long as 87" in length. I quilt them on my domestic machine and I don't think I could quilt anything larger without cursing. I was just curious what size quilts other folks like to make.

MadQuilter 08-25-2016 06:27 PM

It's funny to me when someone asks me how large the quilt-in-process is going to be. As if I know. I can tell the size when it's done, lol. Most of mine have been lap size ~70x84-ish. Some have been smaller such as the one I just finished for my mom (56 square) and some are bigger (lots bigger) but then they are not finished. The thought of maneuvering those beasties under the needle is a bit daunting.

Ditto Madquilter. I talk to my quilts and they tell me when they are done. Sometimes I argue and make them the larger size that I had planned to make and I am not nearly as happy with them. For MIL I made several wheel chair quilts (she dictated the size 38x36). I have made a lot of 60-75 by 80-90 that went to charity, and a lot of kid quilts avout 54" square. I have not quilted the larger tops -- I think they will go to a long arm quilter since I don't think I can wrestle them on my DMS.

I think that is my favorite size range, too. Although I call that size "couch quilts" instead of "lap quilts." LOL

They are plenty big enough to cover most people from head to toe - and still be "manageable" They are also plenty big to be used on a single, double, or queen size bed (for a cover and extra warmth)

I mostly make lap quilts for foster kids so they are usually around 55" x 65".

I like double bed size. It is the perfect size for extra cover, throws, hanging, and easy to hold up for show and tell.

I usually make couch/throw size too, 60x80 or so. Anything larger goes to my longarmer!

toverly 08-26-2016 10:20 AM

I call mine "throw size" I like about 54 x 72 but that size varies by about 6 inches due to the pattern.

Queen sized is my standard quilt, once in a while I make a king ( special request/need) even less often I make smaller quilts - when someone wants/ needs something smaller. Even though baby / kids quilts always turn out adorable they are my least favorite to make.

I stick to about 40x60 maybe up to 50x70. Anything bigger is too much to handle even on my sitdown quilting machine.

I like a good lap size one, but ours are usually longer than most. We have folks 6'6" tall. :)

I'm currently working on a 75 x 90 quilt on my domestic machine (9 in. harp). I think that's about the widest I will attempt, unless I decide to do a "quilt as you go" variation. 75 in. wide was a lot of pushing and shoving. Fortunately I had basted with water soluble thread, and that helped a lot!

Bree123 08-26-2016 03:25 PM

65x65" quilts for little ones. The perfect size for them to grow into (though, honestly, I'm often tempted to steal them for myself because they're great to cover up with!).

catsden 08-26-2016 04:55 PM

I seem to make queen size the most.

Claire123 08-26-2016 08:11 PM

A lap quilt. I also make a lot of bags and smaller items. I'd like to try a king size some day, but will probably make it a quilt as you go.

Same as madquilter, mine vary in size. I don't make very many bigger than a twin size because they're too hard to handle, both with piecing and quilting.

Why do you call this a lap quilt size?

If this is lap, what is twin?

These would be considered European twin...(as 140-150x200 cm --55-59"x about 80") is the standard twin/single here.

Here's a chart where one person thinks these sizes are twins...

I have a domestic machine and I'm a novice quilter. From what I have read a queen size can be done on these. So far I've done up to a 54x78. My blooming nine patch will be 84x76. I've got my fingers crossed. I haven't done enough to know what my favorite is yet.

I enjoy making toddler size quilts the most because they fit so well on my design wall. We are moving now but I had two design walls in my TV room, one behind the other. I can put the quilt top on one wall and we have enjoyed seeing it for days, so bright and cheerful. My second choice is full to queen size quilts, no reason.

Painiacs 08-27-2016 04:43 AM

Mine are about the same size, recliner, couch size. Enough to cuddle under with kids, grandkids, or just to wrap up and relax!!!

Reba'squilts 08-27-2016 04:48 AM

Lap sized for me. Have made twin sized. I like to work with smaller quilts. I have a plan for an extra large twin and a oversized queen...so we will see how that works for me. Probably be a little cursing!!

KathyM 08-27-2016 05:49 AM

My sizes I make are the sizes of my bed and my kids. Queen and King. I made lots of baby quilts as gifts.

Damkina 08-27-2016 05:52 AM

I have made various sizes over the years, some of them just far too big to quilt without problems on my home machine. Through trial and error, I've realised that I much prefer to make lap, wall hangings and crib quilts.

I like to make lap quilts because of my RA it is so much better for my back and arms. Lately I have been working on queen size quilts as I am making the as gifts for family that need that size. I sure will be happy when I finish them so I can go back to more fun sizes. I am into bags for Christmas gifts also I love making table toppers.

osewme 08-27-2016 11:19 AM

I like to make lap quilts. I made one twin size & did not like doing it.

Sync 08-27-2016 12:09 PM

Usually I make lap/twin size up to queen size quilts. These are the sizes that tend to fit the beds of my daughters and their families.

This is my favorite size also, and it's good for the comfort quilts I make the most of.

As much as I need a new and lightweight quilt for my double bed, I am hopelessly addicted to making baby blanket sized quilts. Easiest to manage on my own little machine.
