Have heard many good things about the Gems from quilters here, but my baby of choice is an old Singer Featherweight. I learned to sew on one, then Dad sold it at auction after Mom passed and he was downsizing, making room for my stepmom. Someone got a real steal there for $150! I bought mine on eBay for $260 (shipping included). Can't ask for a nicer stitch for piecing!

I used a Jem Gold for several years. Now leave it at my son's home so I can sew when I visit
Bought a Jem Platinum for workshops - has a needle down button Both are great little light weight full function machines. Even quilted some lap quilts on the Gold. Recommend them both with no reservations |
I am so hoping it will be my new FW, before that it was my Pfaff 947 Hobbymatic, it is the lightest of my Pfaffs

I use a vintage Singer 301. weighs a little more than a Featherweight, but perfectly portable and dependable. and much less $$. I also have several 221s & rotate them so each gets used during the year. friend has the Janome Gold and really likes it.

I have a Jem Gold which I have had for some years. Still enjoy it for classes and workshops. I have a Featherweight but it is heavier and I am handicapped and can manage the Jem better.

I have the Jem Gold 2 and its okay for workshops, but I much prefer one of my Featherweights.
