UOh how sad. But if you don't like the colors, why would you finish it? Then you have to look at them forever. Time is too precious. Work on projects you love.

Wow. That's almost an instant heirloom. Make sure to note it on the label!

Ohio star all pieced together etc but only half way hand stitched for several years now.

cairns 08-14-2011 08:34 AM

I have a GFG that I have been working on for the past 15 years. I actually worked on it last week and I only have one full row to go. When done I will send it to the Amish to have it hand quilted.

baglady65 08-14-2011 09:07 AM

I have one that is 20 yrs old. I took this class on making a sample quilt with big prints and hand stitched! Yeah right, have half og the 32 blocks done and some are ironed to freezer paper and I everything ti finish it too! I don't see me ever finishing it!

QuiltingSister 08-14-2011 09:32 AM

Mine is 9 years old - actually the very first quilt I attempted. I've since used a couple of the blocks to make a tote bag, and given the rest away to a friend (who loved the color scheme). So, since it is no longer in my sewing room, I guess it's not technically a UFO any longer :-)

I am ashamed to say, my oldest UFO is almost 23 years old. A quilt I started when my son was a baby, finished the top, sandwhiched it, started hand quilting it, and that's where it stopped. Now, we don't use bed sheets for the backing anymore, like I was taught 20 years ago. So, I am in the process of ripping it apart to have it quilted by my friend with a long arm!!!! Might have to give it to my son after all this, lol!

weezie 08-14-2011 10:36 AM

My oldest is my first one... started piecing in late 1996, I think. I am hand quilting it and it is king sized ... 361 blocks. I'm probably 2/3 finished now. Between other projects, I work on its long grid lines and in the cold months, it keeps me warm while I work on its small squares & triangles.

mariebaker 08-14-2011 11:39 AM

top started in a Nancy Crow workshop in 1993-I'm just now quilting it...

frostbaa 08-14-2011 12:22 PM

Mine is a quilt that I started when I was haveing my baby. It is blue, pink and ivory. It just kept getting bigger and bigger. My son is 26 y/o now. Hows that for old?

justme CA 08-14-2011 12:23 PM

What a great story! Get busy and finish it must be worth it. For laughs and a family story!! Both.

phatquilts2 08-14-2011 12:46 PM

When does a Work In Progress WIP become a UFO?

Is it after 5 years? When does long enough = seasoned?
Finished ufo this year, yeah, yeah & it was the oldest one [hanging around] approx. 35 years. best thing about it = finally finished. now getting to the others only dating back to ten years ago. ;-)

gypsylady5 08-14-2011 12:58 PM

I have one that my mother got finished. She passed in 1994 and I promised to finish it for her. Then we start on mine - I think it is a double wedding ring from about 12 years agos that I was making my daughter for her 10th wedding anniversay. I didn't like the borders, so never finished it. Maybe for her 25th which isn't all that far away.

teacherbailey 08-14-2011 01:17 PM

Early 80's; my first eight blocks (some hand-pieced and some by machine) are 4 12" and 4 6". Same fabrics....just different sizes. I never figured out how to put them together in an interesting way AND my taste in colors changes away from red-yellow-green more each year.....

Marge L. 08-14-2011 01:27 PM

Started a wallhanging of applique and machine embroidery in early 1990s. Stopped for some reason or another and it is still waiting. Have no idea whether it will ever get finished. Think it would be quite nice if it was ever finished. We'll see.

judykay 08-14-2011 04:12 PM

Mine is a stack n wack that is at least twelve years old. When I took the class I had no idea what it was suppose to look like so I purchased some frabric with very bright parrots in it and even though it is very pretty it is not me. I have everything that is needed all together just waiting for someone to say they want to try it.

laalaaquilter 08-14-2011 05:16 PM

24 years. I've got a quilt top I put together in 1987 and haven't sandwiched or quilted. (I do have the back for it and a LARGE collection of embellishments for it)

SunlitenSmiles 08-14-2011 05:26 PM

is it really a UFO if you are waiting for your learning curve to kick in before you finish it ? When i finsh the GFG this year there will have been five generations (eight people)that have worked on it. Yes, I have it all written down including the info. that was on the back of the blocks and will be covered by batting and backing.

LoriMcc 08-14-2011 05:41 PM

My very first quilt... Log Cabin. I think it's 21 or 22 years old. Yikes! I'm not even sure where it is now come to think of it!

Elsie 08-14-2011 06:20 PM

well if any one get theirs done let us all know we would love to see it

judykay 08-14-2011 06:37 PM

You win, but mine is still in pieces with only a few squares sewn together. I doubt if I will ever finish it as it just not my style. I don't know what I was thinking when I picked out the fabric.

Judy

Quiltaddict 08-14-2011 07:57 PM

Mine is a log cabin that is at least 15 years old. I swear to finish it this year now that I am retired (two months ago).

Teddybear Lady 08-14-2011 08:00 PM

Well let's see...I started a hand pieced "apple core" when my son was still in high school and he is 31 now. I'm close to getting it finished but don't know how to hand quilt so I may do that part on the machine.

joogoo 08-14-2011 08:21 PM

king size quilt, one and a half years old, that I have 2/3 of the blocks done. I can't seem to get started again. I am having too much fun doing small projects.

It took me 10 years to finish my daughter's graduation quilt. I must have been dreaming when I began hand piecing and hand quilting a lone star for her, while I was working full time and going to college at night!

Sometimes months went by and I never touched it--too busy. Then a vacation would come and I would work on it a lot.

We do what we can. My thought is, if we hate the project, we should give it away or change it or throw it out. Life is too short.

If we like the project, we should finish it. It's not a race; it's a process. Just keep plugging away at it and bit by bit, it comes together. And it's a really good feeling.

I only started in 2000 and did not inherit any, although I have a couple of things that were given my by strangers. My first and second quilts are not finished. The second was intended to be king sized and QAYG. I just finished one of the strips

vjengels 08-15-2011 11:51 AM

Funny you should ask! I'm quilting it right now! It's a bunch of 'orphans' from as far back as 1997 when I started quilting. I'll post it when I'm done. next oldest after that is a ohio start with ribbon from 2000..

I guess mine is over 50 yrs old. I received a quilt top from my aunt for a wedding present. It had not been quilted. I kept it all these years (married 50 yrs last May)...separated the blocks from one another, as they were so ugly and looked so hodge podge, and have "intended" to put it back together with some sashing which I think will make it look great....and definitely an antique. My, my...I need to get on to this UFO!! time does fly!! :)
