2 inches for me. I like a narrow binding that is totally full. I did do a baby quilt with a flannel back and didn't realize how much thicker the seam would be, I really had to work to get that binding to cover the stitching on the back.

Painiacs 03-14-2012 09:56 PM

I do 2 1/2" as well. Hand sew to back.

MacThayer 03-14-2012 10:23 PM

It depends on the quilt. For smaller quilts, I will use a 2 1/4, double folded. If it's for a baby or toddler (or child), I will either sew it to the front, and then SITD on the back. Or I'll sew it to the back and anchor it with a decorative stitch to the front. Kids quilts need to be plenty strong, so I don't hand quilt. For regular quilts, I'll stitch it down the front, and hand stitch the back. The bigger the quilt, the wider the binding. I'll use 2 1/2", double folded for doubles and Queens, and I've been known to go up to 3" for King's. Either that, or I'll use a very narrow binding, depending on the needs of the quilt, and how much I want the binding to show. I've gone as low as 1 1/4 inches, double folded, so it's almost a piping, if that's the look I'm after. Those are harder, and I almost always SITD because they really need to be stitched securely.

So that nails it down to no one particular way, doesn't it! Overall, the bigger the quilt, the bigger the binding, unless I don't want any attention drawn to the binding, and then I'll use a narrow binding just to finish the quilt.

Hope that's clear as mud!

Cheers!

To make that work for a narrow roselady you could also try trimming the seam and then zig zagging over the edges. then you would not fight it since you like them 2". BTW hats off to you Because I double fold mine and then hand stitch to the back and use 2 1/2. Cant imagine 2"

Retiredandquilting 03-15-2012 02:43 AM

It depends on what batting I am using. 2 1/4 for cotton or 80/20 batting and 2 1/2 for the 100% polyester. Hand hemmed on the back.

patsynel 03-15-2012 03:32 AM

I use 2 1/4"

brushandthimble 03-15-2012 03:42 AM

I was cutting 2 3/8", just started cutting 2 1/4 and hand sew to the back unless it is for charity, then I sew to back and machine stitch down on front. Also machine stitched down the 17 quilts I did last year for my Afghanistan project.

Pieces2 03-15-2012 04:14 AM

2 3/4 inches

littlesurfer 03-15-2012 04:26 AM

I always use 2 1/2"

Ms Grace 03-15-2012 04:32 AM

I always use 2 1/2" binding. Then fold in half & sew it to the back.

anita211 03-15-2012 04:40 AM

2.5" is what I usually use, however, I use less when I'm using true bias.

reginalovesfabric 03-15-2012 04:47 AM

I use 2 1/2 and hand stitch the back also

Highmtn 03-15-2012 04:50 AM

2 1/4" for smaller projects and 2 1/2" for lg wall hangings and up. As I get older I do notice I lean towards 2 1/2" more often.

It's that ol' eye sight thing... hehe
.

glorcour 03-15-2012 04:58 AM

I cut mine exactly 2 1/8 inches and fold it in half and hand sew on the back. Just a nice narrow binding.

sunnymom 03-15-2012 05:58 AM

I like 2 1/2" for my binding. I also sew the binding on the front and hand sew on the back. I have a friend who sews on back by machine then sews on the front by machine with a zig zag stitch. She made it look nice. However, when I tried it on a quilt I did not do as well. I prefer handstitching on the back by far for me as I find handstitching relaxing :)

klgls 03-15-2012 06:06 AM

It depends on how much of a binding I want to show. If I use a contrast binding and want it to be "part of the design" I use 2 1/2". If I use binding that matches that back, I use 2 1/4". But that's just me. I think you could use any size that you are comfortable with.

Me too - just like Scissor Queen!

stchenfool 03-15-2012 06:17 AM

I always use 2.5 - works the best for me.

An Arm Long 03-15-2012 07:37 AM

I also use different widths depending on the batting and on the design of the quilt. Sometimes I might like it to look more like a small border and other times I don't want it to show at all so I may use 1 3/4 " and double fold. Other times and with thick batting, I may use 2 1/2" but I always double fold.

BarbaraSue 03-15-2012 07:52 AM

I'm a renigade on this one. I don't like wide bindings. So 2" in the max I cut. Sometimes I use 1 3/4". The lowest I use is 1 1/2". I do fold it in half, sew to edges, trim the back and batting, and turn to the back and stitch down. My bindings are full, and not flat. But on small wall hangings, a small binding is best IMHO.

linhawk 03-15-2012 08:08 AM

I like to do the same as jcrow. It's like a flange.

grammysharon 03-15-2012 08:16 AM

I do two inches if I am using standard loft binding so the binding is filled to the edge. Just me!!!

MadQuilter 03-15-2012 08:17 AM

2 1/4 and I machine-sew it to the front. I use the method in my tutorial (double-mitered binding) and then pull to the back and hand-sew the back binding using a basic slip stitch.

IAmCatOwned 03-15-2012 08:27 AM

Wallhangings: 2 to 2 1/4
Quilted Bed Quilts: 2 1/2 inches
Tied Bed Quilts: 2 3/4 inches

nanzone 03-15-2012 08:34 AM

I always hand stitch on the back but I use 2" width since I don't like to have any "empty" spaces in my binding - it fits nice and tight.

[QUOTE=jcrow;5058473]I found a new way of machine sewing your binding. You use two different fabrics. Usually one matches the back or the outer border and the other is a different color altogether. You cut the same fabric as the back or border, 1 1/2" wide and sew it end to end to be long enough for the quilt and then you cut the different color (usually something bright or fancy) 2" wide and sew it also end to end. Then you sew them together, RST. Then you fold them WST and iron. You make sure the 1 1/2" is laying against the back when you sew it on. The colorful one is facing you when you sew it to the back. Then when you turn it to the front, you have the back (or border) fabric facing you with the colorful fabric sticking out 1/4". Then you sew between the two fabrics, on the sew line. It looks wonderful.[/

I LOVE your idea!! Can't wait to try it.

solstice3 03-15-2012 11:06 AM

2 1/2 sewn on hte front and handstitched to the back

piepatch 03-15-2012 11:16 AM

I cut my binding strips 2 1/2" wide, then press in half.

misseva 03-15-2012 11:23 AM

3" folded in half for me.

cschwartz 03-15-2012 12:56 PM

I usually use 2 1/2 inches.

Jingle 03-15-2012 01:27 PM

I always use 2-3/4" and sew a 3/8" seam, turn to to back and hand stitch. Just what I like.

Marysewfun 03-15-2012 03:21 PM

jcrow - I picture what you are saying is creating almost an "unstuffed" piping. The ideas seems neat!! I am new at this stuff but you definitely have me thinking. Thanks for your idea.

I also do it this way. However, on my "Bricks" quilt, I used leftover bricks which were orginally cut at 3 inches to make a scrappy binding. Just my opinion, but I think it turned out great.

I like a tight, full binding, so I use 2 1/4--even when I put it on my machine, I have enough to fold over.

babyboomerquilter 03-15-2012 04:07 PM

I do 21/2 inches.

Diana Lee 03-15-2012 04:24 PM

I use 3 inches even 3 1/4 sometimes, I like the way it frames the back also.

jmoore 03-15-2012 05:22 PM

2 1/2 works great for me too.
