What's the difference

Between churn dash, hole in barn door, monkey wrench block patterns?

QuiltnNan 01-25-2016 04:37 PM

they are different names for the same block. sometimes the placement of color makes them look different.

Agreed nancy. When they were named the ladies lived in different parts of the country. There are many different names for same blocks like that. Kind of fun to hear some of them really. I love the hole in the barn door one. Cracks me up!

That's what I thought, but needed some reassurance.........then I thought, well, maybe if it's a small block it's churn dash..like in butter churner, larger would be monkey wrench and 12" would be hole in barn door.....maybe a little bit of both.

Nope, lots of blocks are given duplicate names and they seem to stick somehow.

As the others have said ... same beast, just different names!

Keep in mind that the proportions can change, as you wish.
Most commonly it is based on a 9P of equal size sections.
However, you can change that up as much as you want, with a large centre (great for a focus fabric) and can make the strips around skinny-minnies or whatever you like!

Here's a flimsy where I went for the larger centre, but still kept the side strips a substantial size. I have seen some where they are quite skimpy.
