Re thread top & bottom, then check your top tension. if not the problem try changing the bobbin tension.
What kind of thread are you using. change to see if that helps |
i had a problem close to that my bobbin thread kept breaking finaly took everything apart found out my bobbin was wound to tight and was not feeding

Make sure your needle is in the correct way.
Have you changed your needle? Mine was doing the same thing and I did everything that I knew to do and it still did it, so I got my manuel out and it was my needle, I had the wrong size needle in my machine, never knew that it took a special needle, so check your needle size, maybe thats it. Who would ever think about a special size needle. LOL Hope you get it fixed. Have a great day.
first and foremost--> CHANGE THE NEEDLE!! My machine man tells me this will solve 80% of the problems.

Sometimes I use a mesh thread holder over the spool and that really helps with curly thread. Also to use the thread on a stand I have been known to use a heavy metal washer on top of spool. those are two things I have had to do to use the thread when it was just to curly. I think it got wound so tight that it just couldn't relax, but with a little tension on the thread it comes off straight.
Good Luck Suzy |
Be sure your bobbin thread is threaded from the bobbin correctly. Some self winding bobbins thread right to left and some left to right. Most bobbin cases need to have the bobbin unwinding counterclock wise inside the case. I about went nuts trying to figure out why my bobbin thread was looking like a solid piece of thread after sewing. My bobbin was in the bobbin case unwinding in the wrong direction and kept slipping out of the thread slot in the case.
Make sure you're using the right size bobbins! If you are, then compare them to each other. I found some are not exactly what they're supposed to be and had the same problem as you. If the bobbin "wobbles" in the case, then it's changed sizes. This was brought up before and someone said if you wind the bobbin at full speed, the plastic bobbins heat up and their sizes change.....Good luck!

Either way, rethread very carefully, and clean out the bobbin case well and rethread that carefully and see if those help. Also, you might try changing thread spools if the problem is on the top and you are getting down toward the end of the spool. If the problem is the bobbin thread, check and make sure the bobbin thread still looks evenly wound. If it is towards the end of the bobbin, I would go ahead and put a new bobbin in. Good luck, and let us know what worked.

I would throw out that spool of thread, I heard some companies actually wind there thread damp that would account for tight wind and the curls you speak of. Hope new thread helps. I also found one time a clump of lint, sort of hidden under the feed dogs. Hope you find the answer , usually a hard problem is a combination of things that are causing it.

Is your presser foot up when you're threading the machine? It makes a big difference.
Only skimmed through replies. DEFINITELY change the needle.
Did anyone mentioning reversing the spool of thread? If it lays down horizontally in the machine flip it end to end. If it stands up, flip it top to bottom. The direction the spool is wound makes a difference, especially when they lay horizontally. Peggy in beautiful, sunny Florida |
all of the above are very true...especially the needle if it has been long used....i find the worst reason is the cheap 2 or 3 spools you can get for $1 at the dollar stores....i know its expensive but buy the GOOD brands...you'll have less problems and frustrations

In our mother's time, thread was thread. It was all the same.
Nowadays, there are several weights of thread, and it's made of all kinds of combinations of things. So you have to treat each spool of thread as if you are starting new. Make sure your pressor foot is up when you thread, otherwise the thread may not go into the tension assembly properly. Adjust the top tension, in small increments until it's right. If you can't get good stitches by adjusting the top tension, you then try adjusting the bottom tension - just make sure you use tiny adjustments - don't go more that 1/12 th of a turn at a time. (like 5 min on a clock) Often the problem is using different threads in the top and the bottom. Try using the same brand and weight on both. Experiment! |
I've had problems with breaking and it gets very frustrating. I found that the spool and bobbin thread have to be the same. Or near close. I have been using up thread that was my Aunt and Mother's after they passed away. Not all the spools are the same weight. The machines get fussy at times. Also, the needle and weight of material makes a difference. I remember using my mother's Singer she won at the Chicago World's Fair in 1936 and it wasn't nearly as fussy as the new ones.

Be sure your needle size, thread and fabric are compatible.
I had the exact same problem with my sewing. Ended up being a re threading issue. I was so sure I had threaded correctly but seems I was wrong as after about the umpteenth time of threading I suddenly got it right.
Several times when I get close to the bottom of the thread I noticed the thread is curley and messes up my sewing. I use to buy cheaper thread and now I buy the better thread and have no problems.
So often just taking the thread off and then rethreading helps me so much. It is one of my first go to steps.
Check to make sure bobbin is wound correctly and evenly. Are you using the same thread on both botton and top? or at least same kind such as both cotton or poly. Check to make sure bobbin is threaded correctly. Sometime mine comes unthreaded. Do not use cheap or old thread. There hase been several messages about thread drying out.
I had that happen to me for a while and then I figured out that when I thread my machine that I need to just give a little 'tug' on the thread after looping it over that uptake bar and it straightened itself out. It happens to me on my new Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. I don't know if that is your problem but it is worth a try. Just re-thread it and give it a tug.
Most likely your bobbin thread has gotten too loose by the screw vibrating out a bit, or there may be some lint in the bobbin tension plate that prevents it from putting any tension on the thread at all. Make sure it's clean behind the bobbin tension plate (on the bobbin case) and then put another bobbin in. Test the tension by holding the bobbin and case by just the thread. You should have to shake the thread lightly to get the bobbin to unwind and drop down. If it just drops straight down as soon as you let go of it, there is not enough tension. Tighten up the tension screw a little at a time and keep testing, until it's tight enough that you have to shake the thread a bit to get the bobbin and case to drop down.
Change the needle for a new one and make sure the flat part of it is facing away from you when you insert it. If that fails, check for lint or thread in the bobbin race and feed dogs and adjust your tension.
I had the same problem the thread wasn't right for the needle and the cloth... bought new thread and no problemsssss
Yikes, I hope you get it figured out. I hate when something like this happens.
i agree with all of the above !!!
i had a problem once like yours and for some reason my bobbin was not wound correctly |
I had this same problem and went through all the mentioned proceedures.....discovered I had placed the spool of thread on backwards for this machine.
Sometimes the thread causes the problems. Use a new spool or different brand. It's worth it to use better brands even for thread.
I have a friend who had her machine in to be repaired twice this fall and finally she changed the thread and voila all fixed!! |
The last time this happened to me, I tried everything. Lower tention, upper tention, re-thread the machine ... yadda, yadda, yadda. Then I changed my needle and Walla! Still don't know exactly what I did to fix it, but it worked.
Well, if it is the bottom of your material, that means it is the top of the machine, if it is the top, it is the bobbin.
But if it is both? Well, you need to take your machine apart clean it well, oil it and put back together. If that doesn't work you may need to get it serviced. Good Luck. |
And change your needle, that is important.

please take a few minutes and try this..1 get a new bobbin and rewindat fullest speed...2. put in a new needle...3. try a few drops of oil at the base of your bobbin..remove your plate and get rid of dust/lint..4. check your tension and 5. rethread your top thread..perhaps even changing to another thread...you should then be like brand new...good luck
Make sure you are not using hand quilting thread in the matchine. It is coated to make it stronger and it really gums up the machine. I learned this the hard way :-)
Rethread and check tensions. Looks like a tension problem.
Just had the same problem, driving me nuts, it was also the thread I had in the bobbin. For some reason it just didn't like it anymore. These machines are more fussy l than my kids.
UGH |
I was having a similar problem so had my DH look at it. He used to sell sewing machines yrs. ago so he knows more about the machanics than I do. He removed the bobbin and shuttle. There was so much dust and lint under the shuttle I was dumb struck. He cleaned it out and adjusted the bottom tension and now it works fine. Hope this helps.:-)
