The Martelli clips must be designed for quilts. They are easy to remove and reusable. Most of my binding is double fold, batting filled and the clips hold snugly. There are three sizes of the clips. I use the small size. The tool is like a flat pencil, very lightweight. The clips are stainless so no rust marks if left in on the quilt. I use the glue on binding sometimes and the clips work great with that. I don't have to wrestle the quilt on the ironing board. I have reused them many times and they still hold like new.

From Blue Bell -"I don't use pins or clips. I just fold as I go along. It all turns out fine."

That's what I do too and haven't had a problem.

I also use the paper clips. Depending on the size of the project I either use medium sized or large.

I use the clips all the time and love them, you can find them in the hair section at walmart or target.

Blue Bell I am like you but we look like the odd folks out. Now I am wondering whether using pins or clips make a difference. It seems to me that my binding is the one thing I can always count on coming out just right.

Yes, bustertruster, the hold and sew works fine. I have entered my quits in shows and the judges give me high marks for my bindings. Perhaps everyone should try our method.

I love the quilt binding clips. I use the on every quilt, don't have to worry about getting stuck with pins. the hold the binding, when I get close to one, I take it out. I use 6 - 8 at a time. Also I don't have to worry about losing pins in the quilt.

quilterjeri 07-21-2010 08:00 PM

I use clips, but only use 2 or 3 and just keep moving them ahead as I go. I'd never heard of a binding gun! Maybe I'll check it out when I get a chance.

Does anyone use spray adhesive instead of pins or clips? I am new and working on a baby quilt and thought the adhesive would work better?

annette1952 07-21-2010 08:21 PM

I use binding clips all the time. Very handy & they don't poke you!

I think it would be hard to keep the spray only on the part that gets sewn down. Maybe the glue would be better-it's elmer's school glue and there are some tutorials in the tutorial section about how to use it on binding.

I agree. I sometimes use the spray to adhere my three layers on very large quilts but only on the wrong side of the fabrics. I'm not too trusting of it on the right sides so I wouldn't want it to overspray, which would be impossible to avoid with a thin binding strip and large spray range.

The Clips are amazing and I don't rip up my hands with the pins. One of the ladies in my group came with her binding clipped and that was the end of pins for me!! They stay put and seem to be more stable. Try it and you will like it!

fktsewing 07-22-2010 07:48 PM

I have them and absolutely love them. Pins come out way too easy, and prick me.

I use the clips also.

walen 07-22-2010 08:01 PM

Clips are great. They don't fall out, they stay put, and you can't poke yourself with them.

schwanton 07-23-2010 04:52 PM

Binding clips are so easy to use. You clip them on - they hold the binding up flat - no more getting stabbed with pins. You can easily remove or place with one hand. I had gotten mine when a lqs was closing and didn't use them for two years. When I saw someone else using them I pulled mine out. I no longer use pins when I hand sew my binding down. (And if you drop any on the floor, you can see them!)

Berta48 07-23-2010 08:37 PM

So how does the center of the batting stay in place with clips? Don't the clips just go around the edges of the quilt? I was thinking of putting the quilt on my wall with a plastic flannel tablecolth (flannel side up so the fabric sticks to it then putting my quilt up and spraying the batting then placing the top on the batting?

The clips are meant only for holding the binding down while you stitch it. I usually hand stitch my final step on the back. It's so easy to remove the clips as you go.

Tudey 07-23-2010 09:47 PM

Well, yeah, they are BINDING clips, not basting clips---I still use safety pins to baste.

Berta48 07-24-2010 04:38 PM

OH I see
I just sew my binding on and miter the corners then turn it and hand sticith the rest.I bet the clips would make it easier.Thanks.

JACRN 08-04-2010 06:09 PM

I haven't seen those before. I use the ones that look like hair slips. I saw the booth in Paducah but didn't stop because I thought they would be to expensive. Wish I'd stopped now. Maybe next year.

I'm on blood thinners so can't afford to get pinned lol.

I think if you use the hair clips, you'll find they'll do what you want. . I use them all the time & just love them. They also come off easily as I work my way around the binding. Just ck the hair dept at Wal Mart. I don't see the need to pay so much for other things that are really the same thing. Try it & see what you think.
