What's wrong with this picture?

I kept looking and looking at this 'attic window' block because something seemed wrong (far right). I couldn't figure out what it was for a couple of days then the DUH factor kicked in and I was blinded by the light. As soon as I can see again, I'll be froggin' that dang thing. Be sure and show us an 'after' picture. You just need a darker fabric for one side and it will be fine.

dunster 05-05-2012 07:57 PM

LOL, I've been staring at this for too long, trying to figure out what's wrong. It's all a matter of perspective, isn't it? There are many ways to do attic windows, and it's somehow harder when there's only one window. So you just have to decide what the perspective is and then choose the angles and darks/lights accordingly, right?

I like this implementation of attic windows, because you are looking directly into the center windows. http://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com...c-windows.html

For me one of the best ways to catch a mistake is to look at the project over my shoulder with a mirror; not sure why this works but it does nearly every time.
I also use the wrong end of my binoculars to create distance -- this helps me ascertain value changes, overall pattern appeal, and mis-turned blocks.

love your theme for the quilt it will all come out all right.

tjradj 05-06-2012 02:54 PM

ha ha ha . been there!! I usually make a test block and keep it close so I keep the lefty-top-righty-bottoms straight in complicated blocks. The seam ripper is my friend.

LTeachergeorge 05-06-2012 03:35 PM

I find snapping a picture with my phone and then looking at it can help locate "not really right" parts of a quilt. Probably has the same effect as the binoculars.

LadyElisabeth 05-06-2012 04:07 PM

Welcome to the club. And you discovered what you wanted to change BEFORE you finished the project.

faykilgore 05-06-2012 05:41 PM

you caught it at a great stage. My poor roomate had her completed top hanging on the clothes line for the picture when we discovered two HST's turned wrong!

jaciqltznok 05-07-2012 05:02 AM

ok, I am not sure what you want to frog, is it that the window frame should have the dark & light switched, or is it that the top part of the blocks is cut off pattern and dots disappear across the line?

MarthaT 05-07-2012 05:02 AM

Are you saying you're just not getting that attic window illusion of depth? I wonder if you need more than one block to accomplish that? I've never worked with that block, so I can't speak from experience. Otherwise, it works well with the quilt. I really like the overall effect.

sheria 05-07-2012 05:20 AM

love you beach theme

Latrinka 05-07-2012 05:24 AM

Looks good to me!

please tell us (me) whats wrong????????

wildyard 05-07-2012 05:50 AM

What is wrong with my attic window is that I mitered the wrong corners. I should have the corners where the two different colors come together mitered, and instead, for some foggy reason, LOL, I mitered the corners that have the matching fabric. My miters hardly show at all, and I totally lost that illusion of the light and shadow coming together in the corners.

Oh, man, the fog is with me lately. Yesterday I sewed the borders of this beach quilt to the Calendar Quilt I am making for a wedding gift. LOL. Now I reallyyyyyyy get to play with my frogger, not that it ever goes unattended for long.

Elainequilts 05-07-2012 06:32 AM

Thanks for sharing . Guess we are all still learning, I didn't see it either.

Pat625 05-07-2012 06:45 AM

Guess I am blind..I can't see any mistakes...don't know what I am missing. Perhaps it's because I do not know the pattern..By the way..What is froggin'?

Jingle 05-07-2012 07:31 AM

It sure escapes me, I see nothing wrong with it and your explanation doesn;t help me see it. I guess its a good thing I didn't make it. I usually see this pattern with darker frames around the 'window pane'.

It is a phrase that many quilters use for seam ripper... ripit...ripit...kind of like a frog. :-) I prefer calling mine Jack...for Jack the ripper. Now...I hope I am right. :-)

mary quilting 05-07-2012 07:55 AM

I was thinking that the mitered corners weren't in the right places - - but then I am such a newbie yet, I wasn't sure. I especially love that center panel (the three blocks). Good job on the quilt -

I noticed the mitered corners but I thought that 3 colors were suppose to be used and then I figured it had to be that you didn't miter the corners on the bottom left and top right. Rest of quilt is very nice. Like the fabric too.

matraina 05-07-2012 10:17 AM

I must be really blind. What's wrong with it?

wildyard 05-07-2012 10:51 AM

That lovely center panel was a kind donation from one of our generous board members ! :D

Lavada 05-07-2012 10:54 AM

guess i am blind too thanks for pointing it out to us maybe i need my glasses changed or maybe a new brain

wildyard 05-07-2012 10:57 AM

Gosh, maybe I'll just leave it that way. If it doesn't look that wierd to everyone else, I guess I can live with it. LOL.. I'll be thinking about that while I finish ripping off the wrong borders from the wedding quilt. LOLOL..... life is always an adventure when you are me!

DonnaQuilts 05-07-2012 11:12 AM

Which one of these things is not like the others? The purse and accessory fabric at the bottom.

wildyard 05-07-2012 01:15 PM

LOL, guess either I leave it or totally redo the whole thing cuz I am out of the fabric I used for the lighter side. Not more than an 2"x3" scrap left. Arghhhhhhh....... frustration!! I am going around shaking it in case there are ripe spores to fall off and grow me some more of it. ;)
Thinking applique now... so you know I am at the edge of my limits.

solstice3 05-10-2012 06:55 AM

please post when finished... I am a novice and thus it looks good to me

EvelynJ 05-10-2012 04:00 PM

I never would have noticed. It's beautiful just the way it is.

I'm glad it's good like it is as I have decided to leave it this way. :D It fits in well with the rest of the quilt, which is a bit like a beach I Spy. I just finished sewing the top together and hope to get the borders on tomorrow. Here is a photo of how the top came out to this point.

Sheepshed 05-10-2012 05:01 PM

The miters in an attic window have to be between the light/dark corner.....or its not going to look like an attic window....

CAS49OR 05-10-2012 05:11 PM

I still don't know what's wrong with it.

wildyard 05-10-2012 05:22 PM

Sheepshed hit it right on the nose, it was supposed to be an attic window, but I mitered the wrong corners so it looks nothing like one. But since it still fits in with the quilt, I decided to leave it. So many of you all liked it anyway, I was convinced!!!! Smiles and hugs

CAS49OR 05-10-2012 05:31 PM

Well, I still don't see it, but I don't know a lot about quilting. I'm hapy to hear it fits and you like it!

SandyinZ4 05-16-2012 06:45 AM

Linda,
I think this is a fabulous quilt..almost an artwork one but if nothing else, just a fun beach quilt to snuggle under. You are so good with putting things together and they come out looking wonderful!
